“A tool,” the Archivist echoes. He runs both hands through his hair, which is dark and messy, unimproved by the exasperated gesture. “Yes, do remind me—which of us tricked the other into summoning a Prince of Hell as their assistant? Ah, yes, clearly it was me.”

"No,” Jonah admitted. “I suppose I can’t. Honestly, there was very little I could do when Jon entered the building. Just watch and stall the inevitable. Despite all the work I have done, despite all my dedication, it is Jon that the Eye holds dearest. It loves him so much… as much as something like that can comprehend or love. I suppose it values him like you would value your own vision. A part of it.”
“I…” Jon said slowly. “If I had been faster,” he realised.
“You let me talk, Jon. Your curiosity got the best of you,” Jonah said fondly.
“What are you talking about?” Martin demanded. He was nervous now. Elias was a bullshitter, but it was taking a long time. It would be hard for them to get past the Servitors, but all it would take was one spark. It shouldn’t…they should be there by now. They should—
“Imagine my relief when you came in, Martin,” Jonah continued, smiling at him meanly. “Thank you, you saved my life.”

When Elias’ teeth caught on his lip, the tiniest bit of blood starting to roll down his chin, Jon tore himself away, placing his hands on Elias’ chest to push himself back. It wasn’t enough to actually get away from him, Elias’ grip still far too strong around his back, fingers squeezing into his waist to hold him in place, but… but it was enough to make him stop, for now.
Enough for Elias to give him an annoyed glare. “What are you doing, Jon?”
It hadn’t hurt, not really. It’d been barely a pinch, obviously Jon’d had a lot worse. But…
“I don’t want to do this tonight, Elias.”

He could just picture Elias' smile at that. Self-absorbed bastard. The Archivist’s discomfort at being known, at his thoughts being unearthed, was precisely what that smug prick wanted. To try and fight the eye as he fed it was to be consumed completely.
He paused. Huh. That was a thought. If he looked back… that might actually work. If he stopped trying to hide his thoughts, trying to not be perceived, what would the eye do? Feast anew? If it could feed on him, it followed that it could feed on Elias. In theory.

In a world where the eyes of your soulmate stare back at you in your reflection in a mirror, the Beholding always has a steady supply of soulmate related fear. Jonah Magnus had never cared about soulmates other than as a useful form of sustenance of fear for his god. He had never given much thought to the glowingly toxic green eyes that stared back at him hungrily in reflections other than to wonder if maybe his 'soulmate' was his god itself.
Until those same glowing green eyes glared up at him in hatred in the eyes of his perfect Archivist.
Suddenly, Jonah could appreciate the concept of soulmates much more.

Jon takes a deep breath to fight back the angry, desperate tears that threaten to spill and clog up his throat. His hands are clenched to painful fists, helping him fight for control, not knowing how fruitless it is.
Elias simply watches him, his piercing gaze almost gentle.
“Don’t,” Jon whispers. “Just leave.”
“You still don’t understand,” Elias says, taking a step and then another, until he’s in front of Jon, only a few centimetres taller, yet seeming to loom over him nonetheless. “You’re my Archivist. You are my priority and my responsibility.”Or: Jon returns to the institute bleeding and hurting, and Elias decides to look after him.
