Summary
Akechi had the perfect plan.
He'd been trailing the Thieves through Shido's palace for hours. They were getting tired, but kept pushing on nevertheless - and only needed one more letter of recommendation to open the door to Shido. Akechi would patiently let them do the dirty work for him. He would ambush them on their way back out, to give Joker his promised rematch and take the letters for himself after proving once and for all why he was better than all of them!
At least that had been his plan before the Thieves started to lose their current battle. Against a bunch of random Shadows, and yet they were making quick work of the Thieves. It was somehow not as satisfying to watch as he had imagined.
He watched them being taken down one after the other.
This wasn't good.
The leader of the Shadows raised his weapon to finish Joker off.
God-FUCKING-dammit!
Akechi dropped off his ledge and into the fray.

Akechi’s eyes widen. They glow almost red in the sunlight. For a second, he looks genuinely, unobstructedly surprised.
“Amamiya,” Akechi says, and his voice is the best thing Ren has heard in months. “What are you doing here?”

Spoken like someone who has never actually interacted with a child in their life, Goro thinks bitterly.
“Yes, because children always do exactly what they’re told with zero complaints. Sounds like a perfect plan with no problems whatsoever, thanks.”
A devious Shadow hits Joker with a mysterious affliction that turns him into a child. It falls to Goro to babysit him for a day—without losing his entire mind.

The Phantom Thieves deemed Confusion as one of the most interesting and annoying Status Effects they'd ever seen. Based on everything they'd been through, it was common sense to them that it affected everyone differently.
Akira would empty his pockets. Morgana would accept being a cat. Ryuji wouldn't stand still. Ann would scream about her clothes. Yusuke would be Yusuke. Makoto would drive like a maniac. Haru would become an actual maniac, and Sumire got handsy.
The only person they'd never seen before was Goro.
Until now, that is.

The cashier had to repeat “Sir? Your groceries?” three times for Akira to notice it was his turn. He paid swiftly, packed everything up, then considered the exit. Considered making a run for it. But before he could even walk towards it, he found Akechi’s gloved hand grasping his wrist, pressing so tightly it was almost painful.
“I’d like a word, if you don’t mind,” he said, trying to remain calm even though he was speaking through gritted teeth, as he held out his yen to the cashier with his free hand. “Outside."
Akira isn't very good at the whole playing dead thing. He's very good at the whole "killing Shido"-thing, however.

Summary

He should stay away, he certainly shouldn’t become his friend, and he absolutely shouldn’t start a loving relationship with him that makes his new life feel perfect… At least if would be if the actual Akira Kurusu hadn’t shown up on his doorstep. Demanding he leave town with him. Now Akira won’t go away, and Ren is acting strange, the town is crawling with Shadows…

Ryuji and Ann blinked and blinked again trying to figure out what Morgana is trying to say. He watched as the gears churn in their head and they come to an epiphany, their faces growing horrified at the implications.
“Wait, you are saying. Joker can insta-kill literally everything in this palace. WITHOUT using SP at all?!” Ryuji clarified in astonishment because there is no way there isn’t a catch to this. “Without repercussion?!”
“Yes. That is exactly what I’m saying.”
Or the NG+ au where Akira knows more than he lets on, the Phantom Thieves start to suspect one of their own, and Akechi is in for a wild ride.

Left to fend for themselves, blinded and injured, two unlikely Paladins must work together to survive. Tensions get high with horrid creatures, a determined assassinator, and their growing attraction to the other.

Or: Two years after season 8, a Blade mission goes wrong, and Keith is perceived to be dead. Lance refuses to believe that, and goes in search of him. What he finds, however, is worse than anything he imagined.
