Mall date (ends in steamy make-out session which ends in Ilya getting slapped and Shane crying)"Why—" Hollander's voice is shaking, but it's slowly building in volume, "Why the fuck did you do that?"
The anger actually reverberates through the car. Ilya's never had someone get this mad when he's kissed them. They are usually pretty grateful, to be honest.
"I am," Ilya spits, "Confused."

The reporter's face pales, and Shane continues. "If what you are saying is true, then the way you went about this is nothing short of heinous, and we will sue you to the ground. If what you said is false, then well," Shane smiles, cruel. "We cannot wait until we sue you into the ground."

"That work for you?" Ilya says, meeting Hollander's eyes for the first time this entire exchange. He shoots Hollander a smirk. "Captain?"
Hollander looks off to the side, thinking. Ilya can see it immediately, the gears that turn behind his eyes, as he starts working through the play, each teammate but a doll, a tool, he can repeatedly move around in his brain until—
He meets Ilya's eyes, and he nods. "Let's do it."

On their defense, they have a dark-skinned man that Ilya thinks he actually recognizes from the juniors—J.J. maybe is his name. On the little boy's left wing, there's some guy who, respectfully, looks like a bumbling idiot from an American sitcom.
To make matters even worse for the bumbling idiot, when he sees Hollander on the ice, his big idiot face breaks out into a huge smile, and he waves excitedly at him. Ilya frowns. He thought everyone on the Voyageurs hated Hollander. But Hollander even returns his smile with equal verve, his eyes fond, like he was looking at an old friend.
Yeah, this guy has to die.

Challenge accepted. Ilya preps a backhand, and like the total chumps they are, he tricks them with his signature fake-out. The squeak of distance they give him is just enough for Ilya to switch, quicker than anyone can really see, his forehand. He hits the puck, sending it spinning—
Right into the neck of Hollander's stick.
Hollander then slapshots it right into the goal. Too fast for any goalie really, to stop.
1-0.
Ottawa goes wild.

The game ends.
10-2.
The arena physically shakes with how loudly Ottawa's fans start cheering.

He steps off his perch, and walks straight to Hollander. Hollander still has a lazy, relaxed smile, his face flushed with victory, his limbs loose leaning against the lockers.
The part of his brain that keeps staring at Hollander's naked chest wonders if he would look this good after Ilya fucked his brains out.
"Are you coming?" Ilya asks, and his voice catches. A chip in his armor, giving him away. Revealing how much he wants this.
Hollander's smile widens. His eyes sparkle, teasing. Ilya wants to bang his head against the locker. Hollander is still flirting with him.

“Oh my hero,” Ilya says softly, and remembering his drama training, feigns dizziness by swaying to the side. While he’s at it, he grabs the front of Golden Boy’s suit.
Hmm. Now that is one firm chest. Ilya gives it a surreptitious squeeze just to be sure.
Final Conclusion: Definitely not padding.

Ilya gives Golden Boy one last once-over, his father’s voice piling on top of his thoughts one after another.
You should distract him, you useless child. Stop him from helping. Fake an injury, feign a collapse, stab him in the carotid when he’s not looking. Or go nuclear — grab him by the neck and kiss his stupid, plush lips until he’s too dizzy to think, let alone save someone.
Okay, maybe that last one his father wouldn’t say.
“Yes, I’m good,” Ilya says instead because he’s not stupid. He even returns Golden Boy’s ridiculous little wave when he leaves. However, Ilya doesn’t wait for the bright figure to disappear in the sky before he turns on his heel and starts for the stairs.
Good? Him?
Ilya smirks. Now that one’s a lie.

He holds out his hand and it takes a second but Golden Boy catches up and gives over his phone. Ilya refuses to linger on the whys, the hows, the what the fucks, as he enters and saves his number under the name, Nine. He sends a message to himself and hears it vibrate on his desk.
Golden Boy stares at the phone. “Why Nine?”
“Because inches,” Ilya directs a meaningful look south of his pants.
It takes a moment for Golden Boy to follow, but when he does, he sputters and blushes like a nun at an orgy. A sight more adorable than it should be. “And what’s my name going to be?” he asks after clearing his throat several times.
Ilya smirks. “Three.”
Golden Boy bristles. “Three what?”
“Minutes.”

Summary
He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.
Ilya is alive.
Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.
