Summary
The gang is adjusting to life in Ba Sing Se when an unsuspected discovery lands them in custody of a surprisingly well-mannered Zuko (though his temper is a nasty thing). Exiled, powerless, and with a ridiculously large bounty on his head, Zuko has to decide how he's going to let the rest of his life play out. Trust grows gradually through trial and error, through war and laughter, and maybe just maybe through a belonging Zuko never imagined he'd feel again.

Summary
After the infamous Agni Kai, Zuko is never sent on a fool's errand to capture the Avatar. Instead, Fire Lord Ozai believes his son to have succumbed to infection from the burn. Little does he know that Iroh smuggled the former prince out on a ship. Unfortunately, that ship is captured by pirates and everyone on it enslaved.
Years later, King Bumi finds a young firebender on General Fong's military base. The boy is injured, malnourished, and obviously mistreated, forced to fight earthbenders as part of Fong's secret training regimen. Bumi takes issue with this.

He whispered the word astounding to the ceiling, and the ceiling said nothing back.
He wished he could make the word sound the same as it had when Zuko had said it.

He felt like a middle school girl with a crush.
Fuck it. May as well lean into the character. Sokka flipped onto his stomach, kicked his feet up, and screamed into a pillow.
Sokka pulled his head out of the pillow, opened his phone, and Merriam-Webstered astounding. He knew what it meant, but he needed to inject it into his very bloodstream. He had to get linguistic with that shit.

She should've known they were right, that blindness in a place full of rich kids was a recipe for disaster. But Toph doesn't like when her parents are right, and she desperately wants company her age.
Luckily, a boy with a temper and a notorious scar she can't see comes along and proves that maybe she can find a friend, after all.or: Toph meets Zuko at a private school and they get closer than either of them ever expected to get with anyone. Too close, maybe.

“Now why would I check those out?” Sokka asks with wide eyes, before his lips form that coy smile. “Why would I bother when I know I can see you at this one?” Zuko holds back a groan.
“What do you want.” He asks, more of a statement than a question, which makes Sokka clutch his chest dramatically.
Or: Zuko works at an on-campus cafe and Sokka is an Engineering student who's made it his mission to come to this exact location almost every single day. Why? Zuko doesn't know. All he knows is that Sokka is sometimes a pain in his ass. And he's kind of.. nice too.

Summary
Zuko grew up hearing about soulmates. It was the most comforting thing in the world to him. Even if Azula was awful, even if Father didn't love him, even if Mother was gone, there was someone out there in the world destined to love him for who he was no matter what.
He should have known it wouldn't be that easy. He didn't even know he'd met his soulmate until the bond sickness started setting in. His soulmate had rejected him so thoroughly and so immediately that it had severed the bond between them, leaving the broken end to rot and poison Zuko until he dies.
The only way to save him is for his soulmate to rescind their rejection and accept the bond. Maybe that's the universe telling him to stay down this time. Because he can travel the world hunting for an Avatar who hasn't been seen in a century, but getting someone to like him enough that they'll agree to be bound to him for the rest of their life after they already rejected him feels like a bridge too far.

There was always something a little off with Zuko.
Maybe it was the way that he always kept his head down, or the way that he never really met your eyes when talking with you, or the way that he tended to wear long-sleeved and baggy outfits even in the throes of summer heat.
Or maybe, it was the chronic limp that he pretended not to have, the flinches he had to suppress when people approached him too fast or too suddenly, or the purpling bruises just barely visible whenever the collar of his shirt would slip too low or his sleeves would ride too far up.
He couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was, but Sokka knew—there was something wrong with Zuko.

Or, Zuko is being routinely abused by his father. All he wants is to protect Azula and he'll do anything to keep her safe. He’s not gonna get his hopes up with the bright blue eyed boy in his morning calculus class that likes to stick his nose a little too deep in other people's business.

In which Sokka has a few more issues, Katara is slightly more mature about things, Zuko needs more help than even in canon, Aang experiences the Horrors, and Iroh remains the goat.

Summary
When Zuko was given his scar at age 12, he became partially blind and partially deaf. Sokka developed trauma from what was expected of him as the only man in the water tribe (and the time he though he was about to be killed by Zuko's boat). Katara is still as badass but unfairly parentified as the series (she was perfect)
Season 1 re-written to include extra Zuko (feat. Zuko's interactions with Iroh and his crew), Sokka has a bit more depth and there are more explorations of life in the ATLA universe.

"Wait! wait wait wait! Stop! It's me!" The guard heaved. Dark tan hands peeled off the helmet. Beneath it was an impossible face; one he remembered had clasped his hands ten months ago. Zuko's breath sucked in, fast and dry.
"Yeah," Sokka huffed, a soft smile slowly curling onto his lips. "You're okay now. It's just me."

Where Zuko is banished without Iroh or the task of searching for the Avatar for his honor, gets himself a bounty on his head, and has to be saved from Boiling Rock Prison by an annoying Southern Water Tribe warrior that makes him feel really weird.
