He had always tried to be the best version of himself and not disappoint Poseidon. But now that he knew Percy was his favorite son, it felt like a slap in the face.
Triton knows he shouldn't feel this way. After all, Percy is only human and still young while he's a god and future heir of Poseidon. He should be above such feelings, it was unnatural for them. But he can't help but feel like he had to do better, to prove to his Father that he wasn’t replaceable.

Poseidon had fathered a number of DemiGod children, not to say he didn’t love them deeply, he was well known for how much he adored his children no matter their mortality or appearance, whether they be humanoid, half-mortal, monstrous, one could not accuse Poseidon of fathering a child he had no affection for. But there was something about this one specifically. “Po, what news do you bring?” She thinks, perhaps, it’s due to it being so long since they’ve had a baby in their midst. Percy Jackson was a boy of five years old but when compared to their age rate was nothing more than an infant. There are many reasons as to why this child has him so enamored with him and those reasons Poseidon kept close to his chest. Not even she, as his Wife and Queen, was privy to those secrets he withheld.

He had brought a curse upon it for his own selfishness, and he knew one brother, at least, would punish the child for his broken oath as well.
When Perseus was born, Poseidon felt it spark in his heart. He felt the currents of the sea around him dance, rejoicing with him.

In the lightning thief, Percy Jackson defeats Medusa and then promptly sends her decapitated head to the greek gods.
When the olympians got a package “best wishes percy jackson," Zeus probably said something along the lines of, "At last, my bolt! Finally, your son admits to steali-" and then gets turned to stone for like five seconds.
This is what I imagined happened, starring: Zeus mostly as a stone statue (we all like him better that way), Poseidon, Hermes, Martha & George (the snakes on Hermes caduceus).

"I know that look." Paul says, interrupting Percy from his thoughts.
"What look?"
"The same one your other dad is wearing." Paul replies, drawing Percy's attention to Poseidon.
The greek god is leaning in the doorway. On his face is the most tender expression Percy has seen on him yet, and that's saying something considering that Percy has seen Poseidon tuck Tyson into bed when his nightmares from the wars overwhelmed him, and hold Estelle as she cried hoarsely as she battled through her first case of the flu. Percy gets it though. He's feeling the same way. His entire immediate family is in this room: his mom, gently brushing Tyson's hair. Estelle, working through her sugar rush by crawling in between him, Poseidon and Paul. His dad, actually physically here within reach where Percy can see and touch him.
"Everyone's safe and home." Percy explains. Seeing his entire family safe and happy, it settles something inside him that he had been sure that he lost during all the vicious killings - and worse - in the past two wars. He knows his dad is feeling the same way. Both of them are alike in that way. "I'm happy." Percy says, finally.
Paul kisses his forehead. "I'm glad. You both deserve it."

Summary
Ever since Percy found out that he was the son of Poseidon, Percy has been scared of hurting his loved ones. That fear has only gotten worse since his travels into Tartarus, and realizing that he was powerful enough to temporarily overpower and scare gods.
What happens when Percy lashes out in panic, and hurts Amphitrite? He's not naive enough to think that Poseidon will choose him over his immortal wife, who he has loved for eternity.
Sometimes the worst wounds are not the wounds of the flesh, but wounds of the mind.

After regaining his memories, Percy had spent more time than he'd like to admit wondering why Poseidon let Hera wipe his memories and steal months of his life. He figured that the gods thought that it was the only way for them to win against Gaea, by using him to unite the camps. A very small part of him had wondered if Poseidon simply didn't care enough, after Percy fulfilled his role and chose to preserve Olympus.
"You are my child." Poseidon says. He wraps an arm around Percy and pulls him closer, until Percy's head is tucked in the space between Poseidon's shoulder and neck. Sitting here, wrapped in his father's cloak and embrace, with the warm fire crackling at his back and the scent of his mother's cooking from the nectar in his mug, Percy can almost believe that he's not in Tartarus. It's all too easy to imagine that he's at their Mohawk cabin in Long Island Sound, sitting by the ocean at night and listening to the waves crash against the shore.
"When I am able, I will always protect you."
