Summary
When the nurse walked in with Bucky’s visitor, he didn’t even have to fake his amnesia. Because he’d literally never seen the man before in his life. And he had the type of face that Bucky tended to remember. But that didn’t stop the blonde man from gasping like an overly dramatic teenager and pulling Bucky into a tight hug.
“This is him,” the man told the nurse, his eyes welling with tears. Bucky gaped at him. “This is my husband.”
Bucky could practically watch his carefully constructed plan crumble around him. Still, he tried. “I don’t know him.”
“It’s okay, honey,” the nurse cooed at him. “We know you don’t remember.”
Steve had his reasons for comitting a felony second degree kidnapping. For one, the guy was an asshole. Like, Grade-A-Probably-Has-Kicked-A-Puppy-At-Some-Point asshole. And second, the guy was going to sit in some backwater mental hospital if Steve didn’t take him in. And thirdly….well, Steve was desperate.

“Here’s how I see it,” the psychiatrist says. “In 2014, you discovered your employer was the old Nazi organization you died to stop. You found out your best friend, who had died in front of you, was actually a POW who had been brainwashed and tortured. Said best friend vanishes after trying to kill you. Two weeks later, you disappear as well. That sounds like someone vulnerable to radicalization.”
Steve closes his eyes, tries to visualize Bucky sitting among the flowers, outside their home. The dogs are playing around him. “I want a lawyer.”

Actors four-years into a blacklist with an arm covered in scar tissue don’t exactly have many scripts coming across their agent’s desk,” Bucky said, sarcasm dripping off his every word, though the bitterness had died a while ago. He tilted his head thoughtfully, “Or have an agent at all.”
Steve looked at him, curious. He started slowly and quietly, “Buck. Things changed...people would listen about Zola.” He’d heard that from Steve a handful of times. Never really made an impact.
Bucky shook his head, “That’s your world now. I don’t blame you, but it’s not my world.”

However, Steve had proof that he was not like the other children around him. Every spring since he was a baby he sprouted a tender crown of flowers from his scalp, that bloomed and re-bloomed until fall came, when they withered and fell out as the first icy wind blew across the land.
