When Aziraphale went to speak, Crowley cut him off instantly.
“Don’t you dare try that recruitment shit on me. Heaven made it clear that I had ideas way above my station long ago. You’ve got some real nerve to try that on me again after-” his throat went dry at the memory, Crowley taking a lengthy sip of his whiskey he was brooding over in the pub near his new apartment.
“Ah, yes, well. I’m sorry for whatever I did-”
“You should be,” the demon hissed.
“-but… Who… are you…?”

It’s an unusual and unwelcome feeling as he lays awake tonight. The moon is almost full, and the cramped cabin is bright despite the blinds. Stede feels weary to his core. His body aches with every toss and turn but he struggles to settle; persistent, prodding thoughts betraying his need for rest.
I miss you.
His heavy eyelids refuse to stay closed, a drowsy murmur looping in his mind. He has nothing to read and doesn’t hear anything of the crew so he stares pointedly at the ceiling.
Where are you?
Stede watches the whorls of wood knots, the shadows cast in the moonglow. He finds shapes like shells and silhouettes, swirls like a face, watching him back; a kind gaze.
I miss you.
He finally drifts off, thinking of gentle eyes.

Stede's searching for his co-captain; Ed's searching for hope.
They begin to meet in dreams.

He dropped the rope, couldn’t hold onto it, his hand suddenly rendered weak; it slithered out of reach. Stede was drifting further away.

Summary
Ed is offered up by his family to marry the crown prince of Dulchene in exchange to save what is left of their country and their army. His voyage to Dulchene is ripe with abuse and mistreatment-- bringing a very different man than who he was when left his homeland. Ed has sworn that he will make the royal family pay for what was done to him-- to his country-- but he didn't count on Stede.
Stede is nothing like the other people Ed has met from Dulchene. He's thoughtful, kind, and endearing-- even if he's a bit eccentric. Ed is drawn to him even before he finds out he's the man he's sworn to hate forever-- the man he's promised he'd even kill if the opportunity arises. There are a lot of missteps, some lies, a whole lot of grief, but as Ed learns to trust Stede and Stede learns to trust Ed in return, they figure out that some things are worth the struggle to build.
There might even be a chance to make their world a better place once Stede and Ed figure out what's happening between them. They might just even figure out that they've been falling in love far longer than they care to admit, even amidst a terrible war that costs both their countries everything.
