There’s so much that Ian wants to say to him, so much he wants to scream across this phone line connecting them, but he can’t. His head is a mess, in more ways than one, and no matter how fast he tries to parse through his tidal wave of emotions, he can’t figure them out.
He broke up with Mickey. Right?
Only now, he can’t really remember why.
“I don’t know,” Ian says honestly, and hopes it’s enough.

When Dad died, we thought it would set you free but you’re…stuck, Mick.”“We’re at the end of our rope, so rather than use it to strangle you, we’re taking action.”
"Men really respond to a firm hand.” She had the good sense not to look Mickey in the eye as she spoke. “It motivates them to behave better. Some men find it reassuring to know they will be punished for their bad behavior. Some men even find it helps them let go of” –she glanced quickly at him– “their burdens.”
