Summary
Patrick spends a week in January at his parents' fishing cabin, sorting through memories and trying to figure out if enough of his past remains to rebuild relationships with his family and Rachel, while not losing who he's become with David. David, of course, helps.
A story about making peace with all the versions of yourself, inspired by Bon Iver's album For Emma, Forever Ago.

Bookmarker's Notes
A stunning character study of one the most (personally) relatable fictional characters, each detail mined to perfection, and set to the background of one of my favourite albums - For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver. The treatment of isolation as introspection as Patrick tries to figure himself out and reconcile who he was with who he is. How he's never really been alone, and doesn't know how... Who are we when we're left to our devices and face ourselves? And how do you reconcile parts of your past with parts of your present, but also how you're ever-changing and never constantly the same person. How do you break open from the moulds and shackles of family and social constructs, how do you give yourself grace and set yourself free?
“Emma is a place that you get stuck in. Emma’s a pain that you can’t erase.”

Bookmarker's Notes
Patrick takes David's last name.
I find myself tapping into Patrick's feelings, as always, and feeling inspired by him-- dealing with telling his parents the belated news of his name change, but most importantly, learning more about himself. Realising there's a myriad of options and possibilities that he has, allowing himself the grace that he can do those things, and in the process, becoming more himself.
And of course, I adore watching how David and Patrick have grown into and around each other and in their relationship in their first year of marriage. I will also never not be struck by and be appreciative of the simplicity of the Roses' acceptance of their children (Patrick included).
As usual, this comes with a tear-jerker warning. I am very grateful for these words.

Bookmarker's Notes
This fic gave me a kind of catharsis surrounding homes and spaces, and the memories that are tied to it. A beautiful story about David and Patrick on the last day at their house, reminiscing the years gone by, right before they're ready to embark on a new chapter.

Summary
“You’re coping with all this really well, Patrick,” Twyla says as she collects the dishes from the table, and Patrick’s stomach drops.
He’d forgotten.
Between all the jokes about the fine dining of Café Tropical, and Patrick throwing as many sports metaphors at David as he could think of to watch him squirm, and David regaling him with tales of his family’s dysfunctional past… Patrick forgot for a moment that tomorrow, David will once again have no recollection that they have ever met.

“What were you going to say to them?”
Johnny turns around. “What’s that?”
“The Brewers. When you came to their room. You didn’t know I was already there.” David takes a sudden interest in one of his rings, just so he has something to look at. “What were you going to say?”With a gift basket delivered, a would-be crisis averted, and six hours left until Patrick's "surprise" party, David and Johnny have a conversation about a conversation.
