Perhaps if he hadn’t been injured, lying in that hospital bed high off his face on pain medication, he wouldn’t have found the courage in the first place. But when Ilya walked in looking like he was one word from falling apart, Shane had relented and let himself hope, desperately, pathetically, that Ilya felt a fraction of what Shane did as Ilya stroked his face with the back of his knuckles, how he felt when Ilya had confessed that Shane’s injury had scared him. And perhaps if Rose hadn’t filled his head with stupid, romantic fantasies, he wouldn’t be standing in the summer breeze at his parents cottage, feeling the same way he had after leaving the Vegas penthouse all those years ago.

Summary
Shane is at their local coffee shop grabbing Ilya's favorite iced protein coffee and his normal tea when it happens.
He'd noticed the older man watching him since he'd entered the small shop, his body tensing when he'd followed him inside.
Shane feels the man's watchful gaze, the way he tracks him without a smile or any excitement and he can tell this isn't a normal fan. His guard is automatically up as he grabs their orders from the pick up area with a small smile and a polite 'Thank you' to the baristas, and turns toward the door.
But the man is there, blocking his path.
There's something predatory in his dark eyes, an empty smile on his face that is unnerving to Shane as the man takes one more step closer.
"I've always wanted to know who my brother abandoned his family for…”
The accent is familiar yet colder than anything he's ever heard from Ilya. But there is no mistaking the similarities now as it all clicks into place.
His brother.
Alexei.
OR
What if Alexei shows up in Ottawa after they get married, during their first season together on the Ottawa Centaurs? Why is he here? What does he want?

Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.
“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"
Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

The second Shane hit the ice, Ilya knew something was wrong. Bood didn’t mean to hit him, it was a clean play and an even cleaner hit. A regular hockey hit. But the way Shane landed and slid into the boards, seeing the blood but not knowing where it was coming from, had Ilya’s heart stopping. Even now, almost three hours later, it didn’t feel like his heart had started again. He could hear Bood in the bed next to him asking him something, but all he could do was refresh the tab ‘shane hollander injury update’ and hope some news article somehow leaked information. He knew he didn’t actually want that to happen because Shane deserved privacy, but he was dying inside not knowing if his boyfriend was okay.
