“Found out by accident that when I'm overwhelmed, I can light one of these up and it burns out my senses for a short time. Doesn't harm us either.”
Frustration wrinkles his brow. “If I can get it to light.” The confession is enough to draw Scott close, to huddle with Theo, who unconsciously leans into his presence. Hands cupped around Theo's, the flickering flame catches and cherry blooms bright and acrid at the end of the cigarette. Their eyes meet. Smoke curls around them. Nature nips at clothing, plucking at fabric like an incessant child vying for attention. Maybe the cigarette trick works. Or maybe it's something else.
The moment lasts too long, and Theo's eyes drop, cheeks pink.

Reflection split, he doesn’t recognize the man staring back.
On one side: the faint bruising of teeth marks litter the slope of his neck. Who they are from could be argued. Stubble on his jaw is a few days' worth, and the puffy dark blotches under his eyes have disappeared. Sleep comes easily as of recent. An ongoing case he was a reluctant consultant to should not have afforded health improvements. He should, rightly so, be at his worst.
Fingers clutch the washcloth, pressed heavily to the glass. Wavy streaks mark the ghastly apparition of a man that no longer exists. Deep in his mind's eye, Scott can see him: Haggard. Weeks' worth of unkept beard. Could use a few meals and more than a few days of rest from the torment of an unquiet mind. A disgraced FBI Agent. Obsessive, broken, but sure of his convictions.
“What happened to you?”
Rhetorical.
Scott knows what happened to both sides.

Boston’s last game before Christmas was in Montreal, so when Ilya Rozanov showed up at the back entrance to Shane’s apartment bundled up in a winter coat, scarf, and beanie with a wrapped package under his arm, Shane was only half surprised.
“I could have been half way to Ottawa by now,” Shane said with a gentle smile as he took a step back, allowing Ilya to enter the stairwell.
“And yet here you are,” Ilya said.
“And yet here I am,” Shane replied softly. “Is that for me?” He nodded his head at the gift.
“Maybe.” Ilya shrugged. “If you are good.”
“Such an asshole.”
“Mmm, maybe, but you are still here.”
