Summary
Qifrey’s heartbeat seems to exist in every part of him. It’s in his chest, in his throat, in his stomach. A constant, rapid pulse that might destroy him from within in a way the Silverwood never could. Wouldn’t that be ironic? That the most human part of him ends up being the thing that kills him.
Thoughts regarding his inevitable end are pushed aside by the feeling of Olruggio’s palm against his cheek. The warmth of his hand bleeds into Qifrey’s skin, who, rather than pulling away, finds himself leaning forward when Olruggio moves closer. Eyes the color of the night sky beckon him forward and the smell of smoke and cinnamon wraps around him once more.

And as if that’s not enough misery for the young apprentice to endure, a certain black-haired boy finds his way to where Qifrey is having his private breakdown.

After their first encounter, Qifrey and Olruggio keep running into each other. People are already starting to think that they're 'friends' — though this is certainly not the case. Qifrey doesn't need friends. He certainly doesn't need a friend who finds him during one of his lowest moments and helps him through it without judgment.
Or: Five times Olruggio washed Qifrey's hair. One time Qifrey returned the favor.

“What’s all this for?” The girls all took their places around the table, motioning for Olruggio to sit at the end next to Qifrey’s vacant seat.
“You really don’t know?” Agott asked incredulously.
Tetia directed a disappointed glare at him. “Honestly Master Olly, how could you?”
A flash of panic gripped his chest. “Don’t tell me I forgot one of your birthdays,” he groaned. He put his head in his hands, covering his face. Tetia’s birthday surely wasn’t for a few more weeks and Qifrey’s another month or so after that. He couldn’t be that off on his calendar, and everyone else had theirs already this year, he’d swear by it.
“I think you might have forgotten your own, dear.”
Post-tree, Olruggio's been a little pre-occupied to remember he's turning thirty.

Max’s whole body slumps in, his eyes falling shut. They refuse to open again, every breath a strain on his lungs.
There is a hand seizing him by the back of the hated steel collar around his neck, ripping on it so his head is tilted upwards, calloused fingers gripping his chin. The small pain the rough treatment causes was nothing compared to the one in the rest of his body, Max barely feels it.

Kai suddenly grabs his bag and phone, leaving his drink on the table, as he quickly leaves out the back door, pulling up Jay’s contact and calling him back. He walks outside, moving past a handful of dumpsters and arrives at a more isolated spot, usually where he’d go to smoke.
He waits rather impatiently, internally cursing himself each second that Jay doesn’t pick up. This is stupid, he thinks, but waits nonetheless.
