What the spell did? Turned her into a child.
Stripped of those defenses, Rumi’s vulnerability shone through. And in that space, Mira, Zoey, and Celine reached her. Not with force, but with gentleness. Piece by piece, they chipped them away, showing her again what it meant to be loved without condition.

Summary
It has been months since the Idol Awards, and Celine and Rumi’s relationship has been strained to say the least. Then Rumi gets an unexpected call from Celine.
“…Rumi.” She hears her aunt’s voice, raspy and broken like she had never heard it before. “I need your..” Celine is cut off mid sentence by a terrible coughing fit, and when she finally stops coughing she finishes, “help.”
The line was silent, Rumi had dropped her phone on the second cough, if Celine had been able to hear over her coughs she would have heard the terrified pounding of footsteps as Rumi ran out of the penthouse as fast as she could.

Summary
Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.

The vampire looked down slowly at the mess on her clothes, then back up.Rumi’s heart slammed against her ribs like it wanted out.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” the girl said, her voice cold and flat.
Rumi stepped forward without thinking, pressing the flimsy paper napkin against the slick black leather covered in her lunch.
“I—I’m so sorry,” she stammered, every syllable tripping over the last. “I didn’t mean—I wasn’t looking and—”
“You didn’t mean to walk straight?” the vampire snapped, voice slicing clean through her apology. “Or use eyes that work?”
Up close, the vampire’s presence hit like a cold front.
Terrifying, her instincts offered.
Beautiful, her brain added unhelpfully.
And here she was… rubbing at her chest.
The motion was clumsy and awkward—her brain screaming at her to help clean while her hands were busy doing exactly the kind of contact you’d never want to initiate with a stranger.
