Booker joined a support group expecting to find support (also, perhaps, free coffee and cookies). He took a side job at a seasonal haunted house attraction expecting to make the spare cash he needs to get his student loan paid off. He did not walk into either experience expecting to meet Nile Freeman. And he certainly wasn't expecting her to be the breath of fresh air he's been unknowingly craving.

Nile gradually met others like Andromache. It took centuries; her threshold was one of many, and the exiled souls were few. They remembered nothing of her or the doorway when they returned to their lives, as the veil of death was impermeable, but their memories came back when they did; and so she gradually got to know them. By the time she met them, they were accustomed to their strange fate, but she did wonder what it was like the first time an exiled soul arrived at the threshold. How would she know to turn them back?

“You’ve watched me with my clients” He says when the silence gets heavy again and Nile thinks clients, okay.“I wasn’t watching you with your clients” she defends because his tone was condescending and she hated that she liked the harsh sound of it.
“I was checking on you, and you so happened to be doing that.” It wasn’t her best argument and it made her feel incredibly childish but she needed to say something. “Did you turn it off?” The undercurrent of ‘I know what you did’ is back and Nile presses her lips tight because she very much did not turn it off. She one hundred percent did the opposite of turning it off.

"It's weird," she said truthfully. "Everyone's a million years older than me."
"Yeah," he said with a horribly insincere grin as blood trickled down the side of his face. "And they'll never really get it. Quynh was a hundred by the time Andy found her. Joe and Nicky died together. And then there's us."
Everyone else is very old and paired off, so Nile decides her cohort needs to unionize. Any good union comes with benefits, even it takes you both ten years to be ready for all of them.
