Cangse Sanren was not often afraid. She had been afraid as a child on the street, before she was found by Baoshan Sanren. She was afraid when the spider demon cornered them earlier that night, and she thought she would never see her baby boy again. She wondered vaguely if she should be afraid now.
But mostly she was just irritated.
She started to yell back at him, but lightning flashed, illuminating the people on horseback: elderly, bloody and bruised, in torn robes of sun and flames. As the lightning lit up all of their faces, the flutist’s cruel expression suddenly dropped, and his eyes went wide.
When he didn’t look so vicious, he was quite handsome. Maybe even vaguely familiar, somehow.

The boys settled in around the fire, with only a small amount of jostling as Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling fought for a spot that, as far as Wei Wuxian could tell, was no better than any of the others. Ouyang Zizhen and Lan Sizhui took a seat on either side of him, the latter folding into lotus pose, appearing as though he intended to meditate.
“Ah ah ah,” Wei Wuxian said and nudged Lan Sizhui with his foot. “No meditating! You can do that on your own time.”
Lan Sizhui didn’t protest, but did tilt his head curiously at him.
“What did you have in mind instead, Wei-qianbei?” Ouyang Zizhen asked.
“Now,” Wei Wuxian announced dramatically, “we tell stories.”
Jin Ling snorted. “Stories? We’re not kids!”
“Yeah,” Lan Jingyi piped up. “A-Ling here hasn’t wet the bed in days!”
“I do not wet the bed!”
“That’s what I said!”

Comprehension and a faint smile lit up his tired face, murky green eyes fluttering behind his reading glasses, causing Koutarou’s pulse to beat faster. He continued to stare, drinking in the sight of the man he loved more than anything. Anyone.
“Yes. I’m glad you can see it now, Bokuto-san.”
