“I came after church,” Ronan says eventually. “You didn’t answer.”
“I wasn’t there,” Adam replies. “I was at work.”
Ronan squints at Adam. “Never used to work on Sunday mornings.”
Of course Ronan keeps Adam’s fucking schedule in the back of his mind. He’s odd and devoted like that. “My hours changed.”
“So tell them to change them back.” And Adam knows Ronan knows. Ronan thinks something is up and is prodding at it just to piss Adam off, circling him and backing him closer and closer to the corner. He feels heat climb up the back of his neck like an insect in the dead of summer, and tries to imagine ice water dousing him.
Adam grits his teeth. “It doesn’t work like that.” He’s fortunate that he has a job at all, he can’t afford to be particular about hours, especially with how long he spends at school, anyway. “Don’t be an ass.”

Ethan is still speaking—yelling—and Adam is—he’s a little nauseous. Part of him doesn’t want to be a part of this conversation at all, and a more traitorous part of him wants to call her back, but Ethan still has his cell phone.
Adam thinks, isn’t this how everything went long last time? Adam hid paycheck stubs from his parents and got caught in his own web of lies. Now he’s lied to Ethan and he has been caught for that as well. He never learns. He always makes the same mistakes.
Adam dampens his lips and chooses his next words carefully. “I don’t understand why you’re angry.”

It’s hard to tease together all the different versions of reality that Dara knows. He's spread so thin these days - the witching, the ward, the assassin, the slut. And Noam Álvaro messes with all of them, makes it impossible to keep track of who he’s supposed to be. Maintaining any pretence of social normality had burned up with Noam’s mouth on his; now that he knows what it is to have him, some small and sordid piece, he’s lost whatever minor ability he had to keep his head around the other boy at all.

Neil gets drugged at Eden's. Again. They get him back quickly, but the parallels fuck with everyone and reveal what happened with Nicky the first time around.
But Andrew remains flawed, so doesn’t know anything is happening until he hears Nicky gasp. Nicky makes a lot of unnecessary noises, so this one isn’t especially concerning—not until Nicky’s hand flashes out to grip Andrew’s arm and he says, “Andrew,” with such strained urgency that Andrew’s head erupts into a riot of alarms.
He follows Nicky’s pointed finger and sees, through the thick forest of bodies, Neil. With some guy. Kissing. He’s out of his stool almost before he can consciously register the scene, leaving the scarred black metal toppling to the ground behind him and shoving into the crowd. Something is very wrong. Neil had been too still. Too loose. An unstringed puppet. Andrew knows what Neil looks like when he wants to kiss someone, and that—that isn’t it.
