Arthur gestured to a spot on the table behind him. “What’s that, then?”
Merlin slowly twisted around to see what he was pointing at, dread curling in his gut. Primly placed on the tabletop was a bouquet of red roses.
“Er, someone else must have left them there. I have no idea where they came from,” Merlin lied awkwardly.
As if on cue, a rose fell out of his jacket pocket and Merlin's stomach dropped a thousand feet beneath the ground.

“Like a sacrifice?” Arthur asked, sounding incredibly pleased to offer it.
“Not that kind of sacrifice.”
“Then what.”
“Like. Just. You know. An offering. Of love.”
“Like what? I don't run you through with my sword? Because not stabbing you right now would be an act of incredible goodwill.”
“Well,” Merlin said, coughing rather delicately. “Actually. More like. You do run me through with a sword. Or at least someone gets run through with a sword. A ‘sword.’ If you know what I mean.”

Eventually, someone in Uther's Camelot was going to decide the so-called "dog" was too clever for its own good. They'd take a long look and realise that "pet" fit the creature far less comfortably than "familiar", and Merlin's secret would be out.
Merlin finds a puppy in the woods. Against his better judgement, Arthur lets him keep it. In the end, that simple decision saves them all.

Summary
Arthur gave Merlin his cloak thinking only of the warmth it would offer in a snowstorm. He never thought his manservant may be mistaken for him and snatched by bandits. Nor did he expect his dashing rescue of Merlin to turn his world so utterly on his head.
Because the bandits hadn't kidnapped a prince. They'd snatched a sorcerer, and now captivity is the least of anyone's problems.
A golden age awaits, but can they claim it together, or are they doomed to fail?
