Will moves back to an upright position, wiping his hair out of his eyes, head and shoulders peeking above the water. “Mike,” he says, pulling Mike up with him, their fingers still intertwined.
“Yeah?” Mike says, tilting his head so the water trickles out of his ears, wincing slightly. “What is it?”
Will’s eyes dart back and forth between his, and then Mike feels his hand squeeze his own. “I don’t want you to, like, think I moved back for you,” he starts, which in and of itself would be enough to get Mike’s soul soaring straight out of his own body, if it weren’t for Will’s thumb pressed against his pulse point like some kind of mortal tether. “Because it’s not like that, I promise. But I think– I think I realized there’s a difference between things you want and things you need, you know?”

Mike’s in a band named “Twisted Septum” which is rising to fame. He’s learning to be comfortable with the spotlight while also trying to get over his life that ended in Hawkins.
Or rather the person that stood up and walked out of his life who he thought would be there forever. Will is living in Charleston, Illinois. He finished his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA) and is working at an art studio downtown of Illinois. He’s moving on, or at-least trying to. The constant nightmares of Hawkins continues to torment him.The worst part is the same doe eyed, boney boy is not only plaguing his memories but also his reality. Lucas, Dustin, and, Max force Will to go to a rising bands concert trying to introduce Will to new music. Little does Will know that the same person he’s been avoiding is the same guy he’s been trying to move on from.
Feeling’s rush to the surface, things left unsaid are hanging stiffly in the air, and things they wish they could’ve said 7 years ago start to flash in their head louder then ever.

Summary
The story takes place after the events of season 4 of Stranger Things. After moving back to Hawkins, Will and Mike are living in the same house but they aren't on speaking terms. Will is incredibly angry and confused because Mike pulled away so he writes his feelings down in the form of letters that were never supposed to be read and hides them away from the rest of the world. While cleaning the basement, Mike finds the letters and tries to salvage their relationship.

He'd been having nightmares since the day Will went missing, and headaches and even nosebleeds were symptoms of sleep deprivation and stress, both of which weren't exactly uncommon occurrences in his life. He hadn't heard any clock, and he thinks he'd know if he'd been hunted by a monster from another dimension - probably.
But Mike was also not a complete idiot - usually - and he was good at recognising patterns.Most damming of all, all of this had stopped practically the second he left Hawkins.

Mike is waiting for Will in the basement, a look of suspicious, nervous excitement on his face. He cleared the table and laid out upon it are two card games.
"Now, I know you’ll resist," Mike blurts out, stepping toward him. "But I think this will be good. For both of us! For when we... you know,” Mike trails off, “When we get partners.”
Will scoffs, stepping closer to inspect the titles.
Spill or Sip and Truth, Dare, or Strip.
Or: Mike suggests a spicy card game to help Will loosen up before college. It works a little too well, and suddenly they’re gambling with unresolved feelings, and clothes, that were meant to stay in place.

"It's complicated," Mike says.
"Well, make it less complicated!"
Dustin throws his hands up. "Yeah, are you guys dating, or are you fighting? Because there's no way you're just friends anymore."
Will opens his mouth. His eyes are wide and a little scared, and Mike doesn't like it, but he looks back anyways.
His brain is doing the thing where it moves faster than he can follow it. Two options, Dustin said.
Will's mouth is still open. Mike thinks about fighting, and his brain slams shut. Nope. He thinks about everything Will said four days ago. If those are the only two options, Mike already knows which one he's picking.
"We're... dating," Mike says.
Or, Mike Wheeler decides that fake dating his best-friend-turned-hookup is a better option than losing him.
