Grace’s faint mumbles and a strange whistling voice die down. Then Grace says, “This is real. It’s real, and we’re getting you out. I promise.”
Simon closes his eyes. He breathes out.
“My name,” he says. His voice is rough with unshed tears. “My name is Simon.”
“Nice to meet you, Simon. Hang tight. We’ll be there soon.”

Simon is rescued from the blood ocean by a stranger who calls himself a scientist, who claims to be on his way to an alien planet called Erid. Confirmation bias: the human tendency to search for, interpret, and recall information that aligns with our existing beliefs, while ignoring or dismissing evidence that contradicts them.
No matter what Grace tries to tell him, Simon is very sure that the man is divine in nature. It just makes sense.

Simon winds up in The Enclosure, naturally. Grace is super down to have human company on planet Erid, but he really wishes someone would have given him a little bit of warning first. Especially about Simon’s religious cult upbringing — if he had known about that, he maybe could have planned a better-worded greeting that wasn’t basically, “Be Not Afraid.” He really set them up for failure with that one.

Simon is captured by a compulsive liar who, bafflingly, gives him food, smiles at him, and pretends the Quiet Rapture never happened.
