Arthur estimated he only had about another third to do of the scarf before he could finish in plenty of time for Merlin’s birthday. It was mainly because the half-completed scarf came everywhere with him.
He partially feared that he would garner a reputation as “the knitting guy” but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make for Merlin’s birthday.
OR:
Arthur and Merlin are roommates and when Merlin’s birthday is coming up Arthur decides to go all out and knit him a new scarf. Secretly learning to knit is already hard enough to hide, but it’s not the only secret that is under threat of being revealed… -

“Gaius — I mean, someone — advised that it might make things worse,” Merlin told him. He looked immediately regretful, as if he wanted to bury himself into the ground right there, in the watermelon patch.
Arthur nodded thoughtfully. If Merlin didn’t want him to know something, it was probably important.
“Gaius, huh,” he mused. “I don’t know a Gaius.” But even as he said it there was something buried way down below, prickling at his memory.
In which Arthur falls asleep, falls ill, and farms, and Merlin brings him home.

Being a prince, the only person Arthur might ever reasonably expect to call sweetheart or my dear or darling is whichever princess he inevitably ends up marrying. Certainly no one else deserves any terms of endearment from him.
Except Merlin, of course, but that's just because idiot seems to suit him so well.
