While trying to S rank the Mephiles fight, Shadow inadvertently gives the guy one too many chances to simply not play the same game by the same rules anymore.
Free to restore himself to the timeline, the dark half of Solaris finds…the world well and truly has forgotten he ever existed and doesn't care, his continued existence is ever-unstable without the help of a human scientist, Soleanna is a tourist trap, Shadow is never going to bother to learn his name, Silver is a little too easy to manipulate still, rent’s not free, the Iblis-sized whole inside- well, next to- his soul is forever hollow, and while it's easy to convince a blank slate of a world you're the hero, the list of cons to maintaining that hustle is actually really annoying.
Oh, and he's not even the biggest fish (godlike being) in this pond (Earth and space and time and the whole of existence, are you kidding him) anymore.

Walters should have died that day of the prison break, and it wouldn't even have been at Shadow’s hands like he spent too many months fearing. Shadow proved that he wanted to attack Walters if he saw him; the Wachowski man could attest to that. Gerald Robotnik just got to him first.
But since they were both still kicking, Shadow could always fix that problem if he still wanted to.(Or: Fifty years after they last stared each other down, Walters and Shadow have an awkward confrontation where nothing is good, but nothing is quite awful either- and maybe one of them can walk away with a better future to look forward to.)

Fifty years is a long time to relive a terrible moment. It's plenty of time to really get creative in hindsight and come up with ways that moment could have been avoided.
He should have picked her up and sped away at his own pace, not theirs.
He should have taken the time to think, just for a second.
He should have teleported them all to freedom.
He should have risked it all and torn the inhibitors off.
He should have burned them down there.
What-ifs didn't do much good. Not then. Not now, when someone else was doing it for him. Could've, should've, would've- it didn't matter. The last Robotnik was dead. Shadow couldn't even regret not trying harder to save him.
