Between training for the Olympics as a figure skater, getting through high school, trying to manage his family when his sister is disabled, his brother is in Indy for college, and his mom is stressed (and there's some drama with money and a restraining order), and on top of that, his coach isn't being great and he's still alone at school... well, he's definitely not having the time of his life, despite what Green Day sang.

Recently, Will had slowly been drawing into himself more and more. In these tense, or escalating, moments he would simply shut down— he couldn't bring himself to speak. At first, Jonathan thought he was sick. Thought that maybe something happened, or his throat had some sort of ailment, anything that would've explained the situation any further.
Yet, there was nothing physically wrong with Will at all. He would simply get overwhelmed, and his brain would cause him to go quiet. He couldn't help it, and even at some points only overwhelmed himself further by trying to force himself into speaking.

His mom cut him off again, “I know what you're going to say, but please, Mike. You haven't been home in twenty years. I'm always the one that has to come to you, I just want to see my family. You don't have to get gifts or anything. Everyone is coming out next week, they'll all be here until the new year. Jane, Dustin, Lucas, Max, Will, their families… just think about it, okay?”
Mike sighed, the thought of going back to Hawkins alone made his palms sweat, but the thought of seeing everyone again after twenty years on top of that made his heart beat rapidly in his chest.
“I'll think about it.”
Or, Mike hasn't been to Hawkins or spoken to his friends in twenty years. After his marriage goes south and he becomes a single dad, he decides to go home one last time.
