The paper within started off as a typed form letter, addressed simply, “Dear Citizen,” which thanked him for being willing to take on the burden of such intense personal upheaval and such thorough secrecy. Wolfwood skimmed the puffed up nonsense once he clocked that the mysterious, important work they’d be doing would stay both frustratingly mysterious and vaguely important. Further down, he found neat handwriting, the only part of the page that had been personalized.

“Caramel Macchiato with six pumps of vanilla!”
He doesn’t ask for the man’s name. Instead, he simply shakes his head, makes the drink, and writes ‘Blondie’ on the cup.

“Welcome in,” said the teen, pouring Wolfwood’s change into his hand. Wolfwood looked up and towards the door. Dark eyes met light ones. There was a brief moment of charged silence as they gaped at each other.
His face was as ageless as ever. His hair, now dark and long, was pulled into a knot on the back of his head. A few strands hung free, framing his blue eyes, brushing against elegant cheekbones. His lips were parted in shock. Wolfwood had pressed kisses to them, once. The last time, he’d cradled his face in a gentle apology. Wolfwood was the only one who had known that it was a goodbye.
“Nope,” said Vash the Stampede, now only a few centuries older, violently shaking his head. “Nope,” he said again, backing out the door the way he came.

Summary
When Vash looks at the scene of Wolfwood reading a book to the kids, he thinks: this is where Wolfwood should be. Wolfwood belongs here. But what about him?
The mundane life is a blessing, something Vash didn’t have the luxury of until now. To him, this is temporary.
Weeks turn into a month.
Vash becomes closer to the kids. One day he gets dragged into a game of tag outside and the rest is history. He loves kids, so he’s happy to play with them, read them bedtime stories, and answer any of their curious questions.
One night while he’s tucking the kids to sleep, one of the younger ones tugs on his pants, asking, “You’ll stay with us, right Mr. Vash?”
Vash didn’t have the heart to lie. He didn’t realize how comfortable he’d grown, fitting into this life at the orphanage.

Summary
Vash does a good job of pretending to be human. Not that he’s trying to pretend. Vash is probably the most genuine and peace-loving idiot amongst humanity on this shitty planet and he shows more emotion than half of the people they come across. And continues to do so despite all the scars and shit he’s been through. It can be hard to see past the mask if you aren’t around him long enough—probably a reason why Vash doesn’t hang around a town for too long.
Hiding on the other hand, Wolfwood can assume Vash does not want his inhumanity to be known, which is something can Wolfwood emphasizes, having his own past demons. It became an unspoken rule to Wolfwood to not talk or think about Vash’s inhumanity and also pretend Vash was more human than Plant.
Wolfwood didn’t think one of the many hidden Plant abilities would include this of all things.
