‘Yes,’ she said and something in Eddie broke at that. Or maybe, it slotted together, like puzzle pieces. ‘I think your name would be Edmundo.’
‘But- Abuelo?’
‘I think you’d carry on his name well,’ she said, cupping his cheek, pushing the short strands of Eddie’s hair out of his face. ‘It means defender.’
‘Defender?’
‘Ah, you protect people- look after them, take care of them.’
Eddie felt his chest constrict, the breaths he sucked in short and shaking.
‘Sweetheart,’ Abuela said, her warm hand on Eddie’s cheek, pushing away the tears falling down his face. ‘Do you want to be Edmundo?’
Eddie stared up at her, the name settling around him like a well-worn, well-loved blanket.
‘Yes,’ he whispered, watching the smile stretch over his abuela’s face.
‘Then you will,’ she said, kissing his forehead.-----

It’s raining when they say goodbye. It feels like some divine entity – spirits or whatever else is out there – shoved its hand into the sky and twisted an emaciated hand in its guts, spilling the rain around them, blood on Buck’s lips, tears in his eyes, rain on his skin as Eddie stares at him, brown eyes wet and wide.

Summary
Eddie's new apartment is small. The walls are too bright, the furniture too new. He misses his couch. He made up the one bedroom with Chris’s stuff, so Eddie’s own bed is the new couch he mechanically turns into his bed every night. He’s got a bedroom with no walls and in the middle of the night, as he stares up at the stark white ceiling, he considers painting it black so he doesn’t notice if his eyes are open. It feels oddly like staring up at the lid of his coffin.

Eddie wakes up with someone’s arms wrapped around him. Which is very concerning because he went to bed alone last night, like he’s done every night for over a year now.
He scrambles out of the bed, completely ungracefully, landing flat on his ass in a room that is unmistakably not his own. His heart hammers in his chest as he tries to make sense of it all in his just woken state. He peers over the mattress, to the person that was holding him, and he’s pretty sure his heart gives out all together.
“Maddie?”
She yawns from the bed, not opening her eyes, curling further into the pillow. “It’s too early, Howie, the alarm hasn’t gone off yet.”

Eddie can’t believe his ears.
"That is such a stupid way to win a bet, Buck."
“Oh so you concede?"
Eddie rolls his eyes, shaking his head before planting both hands on the sides of Buck's face and hauling him in to press their lips together.

Buck and Eddie make a bet on whether or not Eddie can guess all of Buck's lip balm flavours, and in order for Eddie to get a taste, they have to kiss.

“Doing what right?” Eddie asks.
“Actually, sorry, one sec, this is bugging me,” she says before flicking her wrist in the direction of the star. It shifts where it sits atop the tree, untouched, straightening ever so slightly.
“Much better,” she says, turning back to Eddie with a smile.
“H-how did you do that?” Eddie asks.
“I’m your ghost of Christmas past,” she explains, as if it’s the simplest thing on earth. In Eddie’s—albeit, sleep deprived—mind, it certainly is not.
“My…huh?”

On the night before Christmas, Eddie is visited by three (or four) ghosts who show him what it means to let go, to be loved, and to love someone back.

And because Eddie really is disgustingly in love with him, he actually, for about a second, considers it. Just a faint brush of their lips, or the corner of Buck’s mouth, maybe; Eddie hasn’t been letting on too much just how on edge he is, but this is the longest they’ve gone without a kiss in— forever, probably. Ever since the first one. He shakes the thought away. But he’s already angling down, eyes set on Buck’s; except when he’s about half an inch away he diverts, dropping a quick kiss to the tip of Buck’s nose instead.

Someone, at some point, had turned off all the lights in the hotel room, had even drawn the blackout shades to block out the lights of the city. It was dark, and he was dancing. Dancing with someone. Not a group, someone specific. He had his hands on their waist, there were arms around his neck, he could feel their body pressed in close to his. Oh, God. Fuck.
“Eddie.”
“Yeah?”
“I think I-I might have—have cheated on Tommy.”
Eddie knows he kissed someone at the bachelor party. Buck knows he danced with someone. The problem is, they were both too drunk to remember who. Until the next time it happens.
