Turns out, deduction is an excellent coping mechanism.
At least, Sherlock convinced himself to believe as much. Because narrowing the festering complex emotions down to a trail of clues leading to a case that needed solving was much easier.
It was easier than being in the moment, again and again, feeling the rug burn under palm skin.
John helps him learn how to take each step, one at time. He helps Sherlock heal in a way that was kinder to his objective view on an ultimately subjective problem.
Also, maybe they'll hold hands.
