It seemed every few minutes she came to another related realization that made her question her very existence. A part of her wanted to tell Kai all of these things at once, to hurl them at him like a rain of bullets, to see if he could withstand. That same part of her said that he was going to leave her when he’d managed to fully think the situation through, would have no choice, so they might as well get it out of the way now. But the larger part of her was too tired and too afraid.

The understanding that dawns on his face then surprises her; she’s expected him to be either disappointed or dismissive but instead his expression goes impossibly soft. "Gamora. You’re my best friend too. You’re--I want everything with you.”

Now it's practically blotted out by the thick acrid blanket of smoke that fills its atmosphere. She sees the planet as a scorched silhouette, illuminated by starlight and the dim orange glow of flames still burning closer to the ground.
“What the--” Peter breathes from the co-pilot’s seat, not bothering to finish his sentence, all of the expletives implied. “I’m not getting any life forms down there.”
