Summary
A car parked in an empty lot.
An arcade filled with people.
A lake nestled in the mountains.
A park framed by pine trees.
A forest decorated with stars.
A car, discarded off the side of the highway, silent despite every seat being filled. Silent, except for those final words, barely louder than a whisper:
“She’s dead, Scar.”
Scar screamed, and his eyes shot open. His breath came out in short, fast gasps, and he was covered in sweat. He clutched at his chest in an attempt to slow his racing heart. “Just a dream,” he told himself as he stared up at the shadowy ceiling, eyes wide. “It was just a dream.”
Or, Scar tries to return to his life from before the crash. It’s not as easy as he thought it would be (and the ghosts haunting his dreams certainly aren’t helping).

The blazeborn poked his head around the corner. “That’s about everyone, X. We’re just doing a final sweep.”
“What about that one?”
Tango followed his gaze, flame pitching a bit higher before settling back down to normal. “He has robes on, Xisuma, and he’s covered in purple. He’s one of them.”
“Look how little he is. He’s so skinny, and he’s shaking. He can’t possibly be here of his own volition.”
“Xisuma, you’re talking about bringing one of them onto Hermitc—”
“Tango.”
Or, while raiding a Watcher's prison, Xisuma spots something that doesn't belong.

Summary
Something dark shifted in the kitchen, and he whipped his head back around. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath as he tried to slow his racing heart. He was outside. They couldn’t reach him here.
Ever since the crash, Scar had become increasingly aware of the shadows that seemed to follow him wherever he went. He knew, logically, that it was just his mind playing tricks on him—that the people-shaped shadows probably just belonged to a light pole next to a mailbox, or a hoodie on a coat hanger.
But if they weren’t real, why were they so distinct? Why did they all have their own unique shapes, so painfully similar to the figures of those he had lost?
And why wouldn’t they leave him alone?
Or, Scar's life has been a little bit foggy, lately—days blur together, and shadows that look awfully similar to his dead friends seem to be following him. It's probably concerning, but it doesn't really matter when he has tomatoes to plant and sunflowers to water.

Scar grabbed a kettle from the cabinet. "So, Mumbo, what brings you by my humble abode?"
“Oh, you know, I was in the neighborhood, and thought I might check in. See how you’ve been holding up, and all that.”
“Oh, fine, fine," he said, waving one hand as the other flicked on the stove. "You just keep on doing what you used to, settle back into old routines. Don’t drive much anymore, but you know how it is.”
“...I’m not sure I do, actually.”
Scar’s shoulders stiffened for a split-second before returning to their sloped, casual demeanor. It wasn't natural; more careful. Practiced. “No, I suppose not. Probably for the best, huh?”
“Yeah.”
Or, no one's seen Scar since the funerals, and the hermits are starting to get worried. Mumbo's wondering how he ended up in a situation so heavily reliant on small talk. Scar just wants to water his sunflowers.

“They want us to take in a hybrid?”
Scar doesn’t even try to hide the surprise and confusion in his words. Staring at Cub with both eyebrows raised to his hairline.
“I thought hybrid zoos were deemed too dangerous for the public.” Scar waves a hand over in the vague direction of the zoo exhibits they do have. “Not to mention we were never intended to be that kind of zoo, why us?”
Scar was just a humble zookeeper, he wasn't prepared to deal with this pesky bird that seems much more intelligent than everyone says he should be, but he isn't one to turn down an animal in need. Grian is just happy to be somewhere where he can lay on something soft, even if the humans are weird at this facility. Especially that scarred one.
