Summary
The shadows were restless. That meant they were whispering, which meant they were actively getting louder, which meant that Scar’s thoughts had been replaced with the incoherent chatter going on around him. He had been thinking about something important, but he couldn’t remember what it was.
“Would you shut up?” He snapped at the air. “I’m trying to think.”
He didn’t know how many were in there with him. He didn’t want to look. They tended to wander as they pleased around the first floor, whether or not he was in the room—though something kept them from going up the stairs.
Which was completely fine with Scar. It meant he could at least fall asleep in peace, even if he did always wake up screaming.
Or, Scar hasn’t left his house in a while, on account of the constant nightmares, relentless pain, and overwhelming exhaustion. The shadows haunting him aren’t much help, either.

She stops her work to stare at him, astonishment lining her face. “Don’t you know when the king was crowned? By God, man, even the greatest fool in the kingdom could tell you that—I know because I’m married to him.”
“Your husband is a fool?” Pearl asks.
The gravedigger shrugs. “Well, he married me, so there must be something wrong with him.”

Summary
Scar’s phone had been dead for quite some time.
He had meant to charge it, but then he set it down for a moment to get something out of the fridge, and then he had forgotten where he set it down, and... well. It was still dead.
Needless to say, Scar wasn’t exactly in a place to receive texts or calls. If it was really an emergency they could just reach him on his work phone, which was always on the counter plugged up, fully charged.
He was pretty sure he had given someone that number.

Summary
“Let’s see! This one says… Letters.”
Grian blinked. “Ah. That sounds familiar. What kind of letters?” Jimmy shrugs, and opens the box. A cloud of dust scatters everywhere as he does so, and they both cough. He peers over the edge.
So many resealed envelopes were scattered in it, as well as letterpaper with scratchy handwriting scribbled. They all had a yellowish tint, and looked rather ancient. If Grian didn’t know any better about paper decay, he would’ve claimed they couldn’t be his. Some historical documents from family history, perhaps. But he recognised the stamps in the corner, and his own address, and the terrible writing.
“Oh, my goodness.” He whispered.
. . .Grian and Jimmy are tidying up Grian's house when he stumbles upon a box full of letters to his old pen pal, Scar. Filled with nostalgia and determination, he embarks on a quest through space to try and find him again.

He pressed himself further back into the corner, a snarl coming to his lips. The eye creatures never reacted to his shouting, but they did hesitate when he growled. But when the lanky aliens came around the corner, they didn't so much as look at him. Instead, they were focused on what looked like a stretcher, the kind that ambulances used back on Earth.
Sitting atop it, perfectly still, was another human.
Scar felt his heart stop in his chest. It was impossible. There was no way there was another human on the ship. It had to be a trick of some kind, a robot made to look human, or a statue, or something. This was some sort of experiment, a test to see how he would react to seeing something that looked like his own species.
But they looked so lifelike.

or, abducted by a rogue group of alien scientists, Scar is nothing more than a test subject. After a year alone, he finally gets a friend. As the only two humans outside of the solar system, they have only each other to rely on. Alone, it was impossible to escape. But with Grian by his side, maybe, just maybe, they have a chance.
