Steve’s gaze latched onto the empty space where Eddie’s guitar hung when he was home. A big fat tear trickled down his nose, which was dumb. So much better he was sick than Eddie, who was off storming stages and shredding those badass guitar riffs. Much better him lying here than the many kids looking forward to their ‘magical’ Christmas.
He clung to that miserable consolation through a horrible night, tossing and turning. He coughed so bad he was scared he’d wake everyone in the trailer park who’d not already been dragged awake by their hyper-excited pups. Goddammit, he wanted some of his own. Nearly as badly as he needed Eddie, right here, right now. “Oh, Jesus. Pull yourself together, Harrington…”
Or, Steve is sick and attempting to isolate away from his Alpha and found family. Who are not letting him get away with it.

Summary
Steve grabbed the phone to call Eddie at work. There was no dial-tone: "Oh my God."
The power lines were down, now the phone was dead too, and that old bar where Eddie worked was a wreck. What if the roof collapsed in the storm? And what if Wayne’s old pick-up skidded on ice? What if Dustin was stuck in university halls, alone and starving?
"Oh. My. God!" Or, O!Steve is home alone during a violent storm, and the stress of not knowing if his chosen family is safe proves more gut-wrenching than any monthly cycle pangs.

Eddie recognised that drooping head of immaculately sculpted and blond-highlighted hair: “Harrington?”

Summary
Steve nearly makes it.
He’s got his shoulders through the window, Eddie’s grasping at his forearms, but then there’s a sickening crack above his head.
Instinctively, he throws himself backwards, but not quick enough to avoid the splintering wooden wall. He grunts as something sharp lodges in his shoulder, tearing through his coveralls like a knife through butter and burying itself deep.
Sagging against Adam’s bedframe, he hugs his knees to his chest and just waits for the shaking to stop. He thinks he’s crying, feels spit on his chin, thinks of Eddie and Robin and his orange tree and home, and waits for the roof to cave in on him.

And then his blurry eyes pick up a third figure joining the fray.
A familiar figure, armed with a crude spear, jabbing furiously at the demogorgan’s head.
Steve’s head swims and he loses sight of anything after that, the sound of his rapidly-slowing heartbeat thudding in his ears.

In the aftermath of Eddie’s death, of the gates opening, Steve is struggling. His bat bites refuse to heal, he can’t let go of Eddie’s bloodied vest, and his dreams are plagued by visions of Eddie, by the Upside Down, by a creature that stalks him through the night.
Until one night, at the end of his tether, Steve returns to the Upside Down to search for the man he’d left behind.
