Before Xiao could feel any kind of way about this admission, Venti reached out to him with his hand closed into a fist, prompting him to offer his own palm up, confused. He was not expecting Venti to drop a small, black pebble on his waiting hand.
“This is for you!”
Bringing it up to his face, Xiao tried to see what was so special about the pebble, but it looked no different from the rocks he found on his patrol route. Just a normal black pebble, albeit rather polished.
“What is this…?”
“A gift!” at Xiao’s blank look, Venti added, sheepish, “It reminded me of you! See, it’s like your hair!”Or: Xiao, and the journey from a place to a home.

“I think… I would like to rest, too.” And as Venti softens, lips parting in surprise, Xiao continues on, “But only… only if it’s with you. I want it.”

There were several issues that Xiao immediately took with Ningguang’s proposition for him to produce for Barbatos: his other artists had upcoming comebacks and year-end stages that required his attention, he was overworked enough as it were already, and Ningguang was not exactly someone he was looking to do any favors for.
While her persistence to overlook all this was one matter, nothing aggravated him more than Ningguang completely ignoring the obstinate fact that he. doesn’t. work. with. idols.
And as far as Xiao was concerned, nothing was ever going to change that.
But all that glitters is not gold, and stage lights shine brighter than stars. There’s a lot more to a person than what hides behind the faces that they wear. It takes strength to face off against the delusions in the name of values and beliefs, but it is a different type of strength that it takes to come to face with the truth.
And as it turns out, the truth is that perhaps it wasn’t Barbatos who Xiao needed to confront so much as it was himself.

Unlike the first, this one had a few more words—but somehow, they hurt more. Venti thought reminiscing was over, especially now that he was convinced there weren’t any more emotions existing between them. It was over, they were over. Xiao sending the second envelope was no use—-apologizing never even mattered.
But Venti stared at the words as if they were something special. The paper contained just a sentence, and yet it gripped him with a force stronger than all the apologies Xiao never said out loud.
It read: Do you still sleep on the left side of the bed?
Xiao left with silence, and now he returns in letters—each one blooming with memory, with grief, with a love too soft to survive goodbye.

For the longest time, Xiao is alright. Everything is alright.
Except when it’s not, most of the time. But that’s the norm, the usual. The price the Vigilant Yaksha accepted and that comes with his duties.Xiao became used to listening to Barbato's music from afar, rarely allowing anything further throughout the millennia. He tries not to overthink why the divine tunes saved him, or if he was even worthy of it. It’s alright too, he doesn’t have to know, it’s for the best to limit such unattainable desires.
Until it all changes when Venti decides to weave his presence into Xiao’s life, not as a god, but as a dear company, a contrast to the shadows. For once, Xiao allows something good to bloom inside of him.
