Oh my gosh, Ryland thinks, slapping a hand over his mouth, someone volunteered. He doesn’t have to go.
Colt whips around to stare at him, looking stricken. People are gasping and whispering, the sound builds until it sounds like roaring thunder. Disorienting and deafening.
Oh, Ryland realizes as a heavy hand finds his shoulder. His heart pounds in his chest. I volunteered.

“The male tribute for District 11 is… Simon Butcher!”
Simon’s eyes snap to the far side of the pen, past the potential tributes.
They’ve always called the leader of their group the Father. It was one part a little joke, pointing to their affiliation, and one part to keep him from getting caught if one of their number ever slipped up in front of a Peacekeeper. He’s old enough now to have aged out of the Games, and as he stands amongst the spectators he grins maliciously at Simon and pulls the collar of his shirt down. The brand that Simon himself wore proudly once upon a time sees the light for barely a heartbeat.
Simon’s hand digs underneath his scarf, finding the scar where his own brand was carved out of his skin.

Shuffling in the opposite cell. “Can you do me a favor?” a second voice asked. “The next time you threaten guards, can you try to have a weapon first to strike fear into their hearts? I think you broke our hand.”
“We have another,” the man said defensively, and Scar huffed a laugh. “And anyway– oh. There’s someone else in here with me.”

Martyn’s eyes narrow just slightly, his gaze flickering to the Secret Keeper and then back. “Yeah, I’ve heard ‘em. We all have, far as I can tell.”
Scar nods and swallows, pasting on a shaky grin. “I hear them all the time.”

Furina sagged with relief. The stress she had been holding in her body since first being called to Neuvilette’s office flowed out of her like an overfilled water balloon that had finally popped.

“Anything,” Furina blurted, her heart racing like a million pitter-patters.
“You will marry Arlecchino.”
The Knave, an ever-immovable force who had been oh-so silent for the last hour, promptly choked on her tea.
Or: When the Tsaritsa's war against the world threatens the shores of Fontaine, Furina is forced back into diplomatic matters, tasked with keeping the Fatui away from Fontaine. Meanwhile Grian discovers just how little control he has over the games, how easily players can be turned against one another, and how persistent the past is to repeat itself. Not to mention just how much his own worldview differs from the truth.

“Joel, I need you to be quiet for a minute and listen to me!” Fwhip said urgently, laying both his hands on Joel’s shoulders, steadily looking at him. The goblin’s tone caused Joel to snap his mouth shut. He was being serious, and that was not a good sign.
“Joel, I’m so sorry…” Fwhip began, pausing for a moment to collect himself. “...but Lizzie is missing”
The world stopped for a moment.
Missing?
Lizzie was missing?
How could Lizzie be missing?
“Fwhip, you’re going to have to tell me very clearly. What do you mean my wife is missing?” Joel replied slowly, deliberately stalling.
“After the…games” Fwhip hesitated, glancing around nervously. “She never returned”.
A thousand horrifying realities ran through Joel's mind as the blood drained from his face.

After Secret Life Lizzie never returns, resulting in Joel joining Hermitcraft out of grief. He can no longer stare at her empty empire, longing for her return.
