Things had been going well for Kaeya. He had managed to somewhat reconcile with Diluc. They were actually talking again. He had even started eating dinner with him and Adelinde and Elzer on occasions.
Still, Kaeya was struggling. Despite everything in his life seeming to be better, he still couldn't stop having his depressive episodes. It was after waking up to one of these episodes that he found out what may be affecting his mental state.
The curse he shares with the rest of Khaenri'ah. It had started to show in his right eye, and it was spreading. Fast. He knew that he had to find a way to cure himself, to find a way to stop it--or else everything he held dear would be in danger.

Summary
Just one day, and the entirety of what they had spent their lives building up came crashing down. Crepus was killed by Diluc’s own hand, Kaeya nearly met the same fate, and the last remaining heir of the Ragnvindr clan vanished.
Kaeya didn’t dance with Jean that year.

Kaeya Alberich's promises were sacred, and he would keep them by any means necessary. Fate had never been on his side, however, and on the year of Diluc's 18th birthday, many of his promises had shattered before his eyes. Some were obvious and universal, like his promise to protect his own. Others were personal, yet no less important, like his promised dance with Jean. If broken vases could be replaced, broken promises could be revived. A year later, Kaeya strives to do just that.

After Weinlesefest had ended, Adelinde was insistent that Kaeya visit the Dawn Winery for dinner again. Unfortunately, the Chasm incident is still having lingering effects on Kaeya, and Mondstadt's Cavalry Captain has never considered himself to be the lucky sort.
Fortunately, Diluc Ragnvindr is not one to be predictable. At least, not when it counts.
Or, Kaeya is cursed whether he wants to be or not, and Diluc cares whether he wants to or not.
