Summary

Summary
This is what makes him the most lovesick, a Modern AU of Word of Honor.
Zhou Zishu meant to die quietly from his lung disease, wandering the country, free of the chains of the Window of Heaven and his own regrets.
Wen Kexing is not having any of it, thank you; there are plenty of reasons to live, and to love Wen Kexing is prime among them.
Zhang Chengling is not really sure how he ended up here, to be honest.

Summary
Zhou Zishu was given a gift that he couldn't refuse. So he accepted with as much gratefulness as he could muster, despite what he really thought about such generosity. He just wasn't ready for the amount of havoc that came along shortly after.
Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing met before the event of the TV show, each assuming different identities. The Window of Heaven just took off under Zhou Zishu's leadership, and Wen Kexing was still making his way up in the Ghost Valley. This fic is canon-compliant.

He’ll have to look into Wen Kexing's more subtle activities to find out the true motive. It’ll be a good project to focus on now that Helian Yi, out of concern, has shifted the majority of his duties away from him.
All of this can be thoughts for a different time. Instead of giving him a moment’s rest, his body decides that today has been going far too well for Zishu. The muscles in his chest tighten, sending small starbursts pains outward. His already reduced breathing shocks to even less and he grits his teeth. Fine.
As gracefully as he can, Zishu shifts his body weight forward to rest his elbows and forearms on the table, allowing them to carry some of the weight from his spine. It doesn’t reduce any of the pain, but it might stop it from getting worse.
Helian Yi flicks a glance over at him but continues the meeting.

To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.
He comes close, though.
By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.
What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.
“Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”
Lan Wangji stops in his tracks.
