Summary
As long as they were together, they were the strongest.
The paladin was tied to his cleric by a divine master, an unearthly force.
They seemed to have sensed each other ever since, even though they didn't even know their name, or the face of the individual under the magical mist veil. The mystical transformation hide their appearance to everyone’s sight, even the reciprocal once. Yet, it didn't matter to them: as long as there were the two of them, they would be fine.
Their identity had to be a secret for anyone, otherwise they'd be in terrible danger.

“I know,” Will mumbles, adjusting the way he’s lying down so that he’s even closer to him than he was a couple of seconds earlier. Mike continues to play with Will’s hair, delicately wrapping the strands around his fingers. “I just wanted to hear you say it.”
OR:
Mike and Will reunite at a wedding after years of not speaking, where they learn that time can’t bury emotion.

“Don’t you remember?” Lucas asked softly. “When we were kids? Like, sixth grade. We all said we’d be in each other’s weddings.” He chuckled. “And Mike called dibs on being my best man, and then you and Dustin started freaking out, because you were both gonna call dibs, so I said you could all do it. Remember? I need all my best men.”
Will puffed out his cheeks, running a hand through his hair. He already hadn’t lived up to that twice now. He’d missed Dustin’s wedding, he hadn’t even been invited to Mike’s (not that he’d expected to be.) This was his last shot.
And something about it seemed final. If he missed this, then that was it. He had no doubt they’d still try to reach out, but it wouldn’t be the same. He would’ve broken something he couldn’t fix.
He sighed.
“Okay.”
Ten years after the end of the world, Lucas and Max get married.

“Just saying, if you’re taking another hit, you should share it with me,” Mike says, and Will slowly tilts his head, drinking in every word. “It just makes sense. Like, mathematically.”
Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.
So, they get a little high. Mike is very normal about all of it.

"Mike, why are you being like this?" Will asks, incredibly confused.
"I'm not being like anything!" He says, throwing his hands into the air, "You're the one who went off to college, and now you're suddenly all... grown up." Mike says, trying to find the right words to say, but somehow still failing miserably.
"What, did you think I was just gonna live my whole life being single? That I wasn't going to get a boyfriend," Will says. Now Mike's getting deja vu.
"Yea Will.. I guess I did."

OrTwo months after the party graduates, it's time to go back to school. Only this time, it's different. Will goes off to Hunter College in New York, battling his sexuality and feelings for Mike, while wanting to experiment at college, but Chance is there. Mike stays in Hawkins, attending their community college, but he only has one thing on his mind: Will. His jealousy grows stronger, deeper, with nowhere to put his feelings.

Summary
Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.
From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.
will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

Summary
When Will needs to get his thoughts out of his head, he writes a letter he never intends to send. He addresses it to Mike, and tells him everything.
Feeling lighter than he has in weeks and buoyed by the adrenaline of writing it all out, Will acts on an impulse and ends the letter with, "If you’d be willing to give me a chance, I’d be really happy to date you. If you’re open to trying it, please meet me in Castle Byers this Saturday at 2:00pm. I’m not asking for any promises, I’m not asking for forever or anything like that; all I’m asking is that you give me a chance. Come if you want; if not, I completely understand, no hard feelings, and I’ll never, ever mention this again."
He forgets all about the letter, and the distinctive red envelope he stowed it in, until he turns around to find it missing. Now, Will has to think of some way to stop Mike from reading that letter - or should he wait at Castle Byers on Saturday at 2:00pm and pray for a miracle?

He’s toying with the possibility that he actually tripped over and died when he got up to answer the door and this is some pre-death hallucination, because there’s no way that he’s really in a situation where Mike Wheeler is sitting on his bed and asking Will to kiss him.
“You- you want me to what?” Will chokes out once he’s stopped coughing – because Mike had chosen to ask that particular question when Will was taking a sip of water, and he almost fucking drowned on it.

“You were jealous,” Will offers it like it’s a fact, simple as that, and Mike nearly doubles over with the shock of it, an immediate blow to whatever unbothered facade he’d been attempting to put on for Will.
“Was not,” but his voice is so weak that he nearly collapses in embarrassment, an omission of guilt clear as day.
