Camelot has fallen, the knights have been separated, and as betrayal heaps upon tragedy, Arthur is beginning to lose hope in the dream of a kingdom he is destined to create. But even when times are at their darkest, Merlin refuses to lose faith, even if his advice isn't quite what Arthur was expecting.
Rewrite of the dialogue where Arthur has his third act breakdown in The Sword in the Stone pt.2, because I have opinions and want catharsis.

Imprisoned in a government ministry for a crime he didn't commit, Sam Winchester is fated for execution if his case is not appealed. Desperate to save his brother, Dean seeks out the services of Castiel, a member of the state's hive-mind legal council, who agrees to fight his case in the Court of the Authority. But as their defence develops and evidence is brought to light, it appears that what was taken for a tragic misunderstanding was in fact something much deeper, something that throws Sam and Dean into a secret they didn't even know they had, something to do with their long-dead father. And as they try to fight demons from a past that wasn't even theirs, Dean comes face to face with a part of himself he was always too scared to see.

It's been a year since the first protests against the ban on magic, and Merlin and the others have come a long way: magic has been decriminalised, and mages across the country are beginning to come out of hiding and express their identities. Merlin and Arthur are now in their second year at university, and Uther is on trial for the offences committed during his time in office. On the whole, it seems things might finally be beginning to look up for Merlin. But not everything is going as well as first appears: with increasing openness about magic, anti-mage sentiment is on the rise. Mordred has vanished off the face of the earth, and Scotland Yard are still no closer to apprehending the person- or people- behind the attack on London Bridge the previous year. And when the unexpected happens in the midst of Uther's trial, it seems it can only take the smallest thing to pull all they have built tumbling down.

The modern world has a lot of surprises for Arthur, who happens to have spent the last fifteen hundred years at the bottom of a lake. But aside from the strange new languages and not-quite-magic that everyone seems to think is normal, one thing bothers Arthur more than anything, and that is how he and his friends are remembered in history.

After Arthur's death, Merlin makes frequent visits to the lake in the hopes that he will return. But as time drags by, he begins to lose hope not only that his friend will return, but that there will be anything good left for him to return to. And it isn't made any better by the strangely familiar voice in his head that can't be driven away by his memories...

Modern roommates au!! Magic is outlawed across the UK. When Merlin, a powerful and unregistered warlock ends up sharing a room with the son of the government minister responsible for the injustices against his kind, tension starts to rise despite the growing friendship between the two.
