“I’m not infected.” When Nicolò stayed silent, he said it again, this time in Italian.
He still had his crossbow trained on the man as he watched him pull himself out of the hole using the rope tied to a pine tree not far from it.
The scanner flashed green. Nicolò carefully turned it off and tucked it back in his satchel.
“I’m Joe,” the man said, holding both arms up like he was surrendering. “I mean no harm.” His Italian was fluent. “I came by boat. It needed supplies, and I–I haven’t eaten for three days… I know it’s probably nothing compared to what happened in some quarantine zones, but–”
He had heard horror stories from the radio about the lawlessness of the mainland and beyond, where the strong and the prepared preyed upon the weak and the careless. But if the man meant to kill him for his cottage, chickens, two cows and a sad vegetable patch, he was welcome to them. Call it destiny.

Summary
“We’re the same age, the young Caesar and I,” Nicolò said by way of distracting Yusuf because right then, he looked sad.
“You’re way taller and better-looking than him,” Yusuf said vindictively. “That’s what you got growing up drinking Rome’s filthy water.”
“I drink Rome’s filthy water, too.” Nicolò smiled. “Though I was born in this place called Liguria, do you know it? It’s in the north.” Nicolò didn’t really know why he felt he needed to share.
“Tiberius told you?”
Nicolò nodded, bending to submerge half his face, too, seeing Yusuf from the same angle – half of his face obscured by steam and half a rippling reflection.
“Where were you born, Yusuf?” Nicolò whispered, careful with his words as if they could hurt his friend.
Yusuf closed his eyes and left Nicolò in silence for a long time, he started to fidget.
Then, “Carthage. To the south,” he said without opening his eyes.

“You’re in trouble, Candidate Thousand-Sixty-Nine.”He must be enjoying this, Nicolò thinks bitterly. “It’s obvious, isn’t it?” he replies, trying vainly to slow his descent by changing the trajectory of his fall – no point in landing in the designated spot in pieces.
“Not enough stones and a malfunctioning chute.”
Yusuf’s voice is muffled by static, but Nicolò could imagine the sneer.
“Are you going to tell me about my poor math skills next?” he manages. “Like how I chose brick instead of membrane structure?”
It is silent for a few seconds before he answers. “You should have chosen the membrane. Our dummies would have lived.”
Holy Mother take this man.“Yeah,” he says. “No shit.” It would be nice if he could live now; he’s not a screaming dummy in a simulation.
Then he feels a tug on his pack and looks up to see Yusuf cutting off his defective parachute.
“What are you doing?”
“I have no time to wait for you to get over your pride and ask me for help, Priest.”

Nicky rolled his eyes at Quynh when she said that, but that's actually one of the most plausible explanations of all the presents and Joe's covert coming and going. Because nobody admitted to letting him in or giving anyone a copy of the key. In fact, nobody has ever heard of Joe, nobody.
"Maybe he's a real Santa. Visible only to thirsty virgins. You know, like unicorns."
Nicky threw a pillow at Andy for saying that. But a part of him that still believes in destiny, divine interventions and a higher power beyond mankind's understanding thinks that this might be plausible.

Summary
