Carter looses a weak scoff, eyes fluttering closed. “G-got stabbed. S’not usually conducive to good health.”
Peter rolls his eyes, though a small smile creeps to his face anyway at the confirmation that yes, despite everything, Carter is still somehow here. Breathing and talking and joking. A far cry from the lifeless weight against Peter’s palms when he rolled him over in the trauma room, unconscious and barely breathing.
OR
Carter gets sick at home following the stabbing, and Peter comes to check on him.

Summary
When at last she catches sight of him, all grievance in her voice evaporates.
“Carter?”
He's curled on his side beneath his comforter, eyes closed, evidently still deep asleep. The cause of his state is explained in the rosiness spreading across his cheeks and nose, the unmistakable flare of fever. Where the flush doesn't reach, there's instead complete pallor.
She sets her crutch against the wall and wanders to his bedside, the physician within her momentarily silenced as she stands over him, just watching the slow shallowness of his breaths.
He's sick.
OR
While Carter is renting from Kerry in S5, he falls sick one day, and things are far worse than they initially seem.

Summary
Luis has been called plenty of things in his life. Don Quixote. Hermano. Dr. Serra. Cabrón. Murderer.
But he’s never been called a hero. Why would anyone do such a thing? Luis Serra has always been in it to save his own skin. He’s a survivor. He makes deals, and he stays alive.
So when he is brought to the brink of death and offered another deal, of course he takes it.
But this deal may ask more of him than he ever thought he was capable of giving. And as he begins to fall for the man he’s been assigned to kill, it becomes clearer and clearer that there won’t be a happy ending here. Luis is becoming a monster, in every sense of the word.
There is no hero in this story. There is only a man on the brink of death, a man who has spent so long surviving that he has forgotten what he’s living for. With the ticking clock of the parasite overtaking his body, the freedom he’s wanted for so long is finally near.
What a shame that it will come at the cost of everything else.Or: Luis Serra is implanted with a variant of the Plaga parasite and offered a deal: If he betrays Leon and Ashley, he’ll be given the cure.

Summary
Carter doesn't quite know what compels him to do what he does. Perhaps it's some misguided sense of heroism, his lifelong inability to just let things be when there's something- anything- he can do about it. Perhaps it's reckless stupidity brought on by yet another shift of doing anything but saving lives.
Whatever it is, he leans into it fully, and slips into the freezing depths.

They stare at each other. Chris feels his heart break and reform in his chest.
He's lying there, displaced in time, bleeding with an infected gunshot wound, and he's asking after Claire.
It's so Leon that it hurts.

When Leon S. Kennedy woke up in a cell, his hands cuffed in front of him, his first thought was:
Did the DSO ever negotiate with terrorists?
The obvious answer was 'no'. In all the time Leon had been working as an agent, never once had he heard of a rescue mission for a missing colleague. If an agent failed their mission it usually meant one of two things, either they'd been lucky and were dead, or if not – well, they might have ended up in a situation like he just had. Which usually meant they would be dead in five to ten business days. Either way they were not coming back. His only hope at this point would be that he could find a way out by himself.

Summary
My performance reliability dropped but the spike of fear upped my reaction time, and my body moved before I consciously realized that it wasn’t going to work.
I swung at TargetContact with my improvised club, but the force I put into the swing made my wrecked knee joint give out, and the blow only grazed it. I hit the floor again, and TargetContact was on top of me.
Turns out, I was right that this was going to be worse. I just had no idea exactly how much worse.
OR
Things go a lot worse for Murderbot at the end of Network Effect before they get better. This changes a good number of things, but maybe not anything that really matters. Like how far the people that love it are willing to go for its sake.
