Summary
Dean Winchester and Castiel Kline meet in the summer of 1963, hired for the season to do the remote and isolated work guarding Bobby Singer's flock of sheep in the open range on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming.
While both are from similar backgrounds, the opportunities and personality they have are different: non-demonstrative Dean, having grown up without parents or family money, holds his thoughts and feelings largely to himself since he's already used to hold the "older brother" weight, while Castiel, after noticing he would never make his Dad satisfied decided to leave to pursue freedom through the rodeo circuit, is more open about what he wants in life.
Although both live as straight, with Dean scheduled to get married to his girlfriend Lisa in November, they more out of a physical need have a spur of the moment sexual encounter with each other, which Dean desperately sees as one time only. However by the end of the season, they have fallen.
As they finish their work on Brokeback Mountain, they have to figure out how to reconcile their feelings for each other, their marriages, family and real life.Bookmarked by strawbum

“I’m mortified, Eddie, I really thought Buck would have talked to you about it,” Maddie says. She looks genuinely regretful, her eyebrows pulling together with concern. “Obviously, he clarified things for me, told me that he wasn’t pining for his straight best friend, and I’m just…I’m so sorry. It wasn’t my place to speculate on your relationship like that.”
There must be a worm that’s wrapped itself around his thoughts — that’s constrained his neural pathways to just the thought of Buck’s in love with you — because something takes over Eddie’s mouth. Something entirely foreign and jarring prompts him to say with too much incredulity: “Buck said he wasn’t in love with me?”
Maddie gapes at him.
Eddie snaps his mouth shut with so much force his teeth click.

Rain drips down the slope of Pete's nose, over his full lips. He's lying on his scarred cheek, pressing that sensitive and intimate part of himself down on Ray's shoulder. He shifts his face, rubbing his hair against the bare skin of Ray's neck, sending shivers through his entire body. Ray adjusts himself as subtly as he can. Accidentally squeezes Pete's muscular shoulder a little bit. Prays that he won't notice.
Watches, holding his breath, as Pete keeps dreaming.
Wonders if he's dreaming about a stocky, sweaty redhead, hauling bales of hay in the stuffy Maine spring.

No, Ray did not always know this, and he reacts accordingly, slack-jawed and wide eyed. Is it hot in here, or is that just the bar? What the fuck is he supposed to say to that? Brilliant as he is, he comes up with a very eloquent “Huh-what?”
“You know,” Peter seems partly entertained and partly nervous as he drops his voice to clarify, “Sexually.”

Summary
Pete barely manages to get by as a hustler in Portland, Oregon, or really, wherever he takes himself. Some days, he wakes up somewhere he only vaguely can recall he didn't go to sleep at. He deals with it with drugs, the old rich men on dark avenues, and with Ray.
Ray finds himself in largely the same circumstances. Hailing from disinterested parents, more focused on their own social-climb than their son, Ray took to the streets. Call it rich boy rebellion or whatever you want--at night he's either beside Pete under a streetlight, or picking him off the ground.
Pete wants to find his family. He brings Ray with him. They go to Idaho. Whether they admit it or not, they're both the only thing propping each other up as they each make their own journeys of discovery.

Every molecule of Raymond Garraty slows to a snail’s pace. McVries peers at him, dark eyes half-lidded, smiling softly. Garraty feels a little like he’s fallen behind in a race he didn’t know he was running.
They keep looking at each other, silently, until McVries’s lips quirk up like Garraty’s said something funny, and he lifts his bottle to his lips.
“What is it?” Garraty asks. “What’s so funny?”
McVries shakes his head, still wearing that knowing smile. “Nothing, Ray. Not a thing.”
