A draught of wind … I could listen to the softness of Mairon’s petal-perfect skin in it. I could savor the unnatural shadows illuminating his brow and cheekbones whispering across his features and taste the lashing of his hair in my mouth, scarlet-sizzling as coals. On his flaming head his crown – for it was more iron crown than helmet – was a smooth black somehow enlightening the flawlessness of his features even more. His iron-slinking armor, sharp as curving wolf teeth, clung to the virtue of his shape. His fiery hair, tamed in the forge only, was afly like shimmering birds. I saw it whip through the air as Mairon turned abruptly around even before the roaring Orcs next to me blinked at my sudden presence.

Summary
This, all of it, was Mairon’s idea. His dutiful lieutenant, his resplendent Maia, sidling up to him as he worked in his rooms, as with a quill he inked a diagram on an empty book-sheaf. And in the diagram an instrument was depicted, a tool for bodily investigation whose construction Melkor was refining, and it was one Mairon had not encountered before.
May I? he asked, bending his fair head over the page, running his glittering index finger just outside the not-yet-dry outline of ink. He was curious. He had questions. Melkor answered them plainly, and Mairon nodded as he listened, and though his face was schooled into unerring neutrality, Melkor heard the slight quickening of his breath, noted the darkening of his eyes to murky sand-storm gold.
Could you show me? Mairon requested at last. A… demonstration, if that is not too much to ask; and so here they are.

“The sortie was a triumph,” Mairon says, holding the helm upon his lap and gazing up into his face. He smiles a smile that grows and stretches, wider and wider, as though there is something within him that cannot be contained. Something vast. Something keen. “Beleriand is open to us. Those who thought we could be penned in, who thought our might the lesser, lived to regret such misapprehensions. Or,” he adds, showing his teeth, “did not live, as the case may be.”
Melkor is drawn to that smile, to the something—vital, beguiling—underneath it. He reaches out. Places the leather of his gloved palm and fingers upon Mairon’s cheek. Beneath the leather, pain tingles, his burned skin protesting the contact. Mairon nuzzles against him, eyes flickering shut, a noise issuing from him that is happy and mindless, like the purr of some great pleased beast; and Melkor forgets the pain.
“Congratulations are in order, I should think,” he tells him, “to the brilliant mind who engineered this victory.”

When Dior Eluchíl refuses to give up the Silmaril and the remaining sons of Fëanor are forced to act, Amras offers to infiltrate Doriath and steal the Silmaril.
Unfortunately for him, he swiftly learns that Dior is not easily deceived and ends up being captured and kept as a hostage. While the Fëanorians are desperately trying to get him and the Silmaril back, Amras soon finds himself bonding with Dior's twin sons as well as his eerily charming captor, desperately craving the affection and closeness the Oath and Amrod's death have long taken from him; the very same Oath that may soon force his brothers to sacrifice him.

Mairon tells them he is but a humble spirit in the service of his master Aulë and his kin. Centuries have to pass until he understands the meaning of his actions: he is lying. Mairon is neither humble nor does he want to serve. He wants to create. There is a vision in his heart, a hungry, screaming thing it is, and it demands everything.
