1) Treating Ozai as an actual character with motivations beyond simply Being Evil For The Sake Of Evilness, & dealing with his relationship with his family.

The reveal in the comics that Ozai's & Ursa's marriage came about because of a prophecy makes no sense, because dammit you do not establish a great lineage through a second son unless you want a civil war. But... what if the fact that it made no sense was the whole point?
OR:
The Fire Sages bring Firelord Azulon a prophecy: That mixing the royal bloodline with that of Avatar Roku will create a mighty lineage. But there's a problem. Roku has one descendant of marriageable age, & she's already married to his second son, with a baby on the way. -

Summary
Agni has stood by as his children have used their gifts to burn the world, consumed with despair but reluctant to interfere. When the one who is meant to act as his intermediary in the mortal realm burns his own son in a shocking act of cruelty in front of a crowd who fail to step in, that is the final straw.
The Fire Nation descends into chaos at the sudden loss of firebending, & the war becomes bloodier still, as the troops fight on out of sheer desperation, terrified that a reckoning is now due.
And then Iroh, tending his injured nephew while trying to keep him safe from a vengeful father who blames him for this calamity, realises that Zuko's inner flame still burns...

But then there was a pause, before his father continued, the flames returning to normal. “You have grown bold, to ask such a thing of me. Tell me why you believe I should, as you put it, use you.” ]
Instead of flying into a rage when Ozai demands that Iroh's birthright be revoked, Azulon asks for his reasoning. Ozai thinks this is a good sign. He is very wrong.

Who would betray the tribe in such a way? Looks like a mystery for Expert Detective Sokka!

[ He drinks the tea and tries not to look uncomfortable as Zhao moves closer and closer. He doesn't know how, but somehow every time he blinks the man is closer. He should say something, but what? He’s not actually doing anything wrong. (He should move closer; Zuko is his prince, and he should be hanging on his every word. It was perfectly reasonable.)
If uncle were here, objecting would earn a stern look and a proverb on the nature of politeness and being receptive to your conversation partners.
Zuko says nothing.
Zhao is next to him now. He rests a hand on Zuko's thigh.
He wants to say something, but his head feels like it’s stuffed with cotton and his tongue won't work properly. ]Wherever Zuko goes, Zhao always seems to be there, smirking & offering him tea. He doesn't want the tea-that-is-not-just-tea. But he can't explain why to his uncle, or tell him that the very thought of tea makes him want to scream (in rage, not fear, because princes don't feel fear).

Unable to sense Rey in the Force (& so believing her dead), he vows revenge & declares war on the whole First Order, with the help of only a very confused Resistance technician, a couple of droids, & some porgs.
OR: Kylo Ren goes on a rollicking revenge rampage against a whole army & somehow becomes the new face of the Resistance as a result. BB-8 is so done. R2-D2 is even more done. Rose Tico isn't sure she signed up for this shit. But at least the porgs are happy.
