This whole spring into the summer has been a cramped airport – New Orleans to Atlanta to London to Amsterdam to Berlin to Prague to Lisbon to Barcelona to Rome to Warsaw to Paris, Claudia in a windbreaker or shorts or a skirt he told her to change out of before boarding a plane to no avail, Claudia in sunglasses, Claudia with a book or Claudia with her nose in her phone, Claudia with a crochet hook and a ball of dollar-fifty crunchy acrylic yarn filing the cabin with the smell of plastic and imitation sheep, and then Louis. Louis there, too. Something with bigger teeth looming over the both of them, but free. The same way that a rehabilitated raptor is free. Scar tissue still where he’d bled through the feathers and the gauze and the cotton but eager to fly into the blue sky right out of the carrier. Bars lifted. Door opened. Soaring into the clouds, the hinge of a jaw, the dull throb of the unused joints of the mechanical wing. Ring-legged, but free.

On good days, Louis let him serve. Armand could let the role consume him, his mind empty, holding his hands behind his back as if they were bound for hours. And there was pain, yes, there was always pain; the crop and the flogger, reward and punishment. An intoxicating sensicality. Here is what you have done; here is what will be made of it.
But sometimes Louis was elsewhere, and Armand did all he could to claw himself back to the burning spotlight of Louis’s attention. He paid in careful obedience, in well-performed penitence, in a willingness to endure whatever was asked of him.
Today: Louis needed this. And Armand needed to be what Louis needed. There was nothing else.
Louis comes home angry. Armand faces the yawning edge of what he is willing to endure to bring Louis back to him.

She takes his chin between her fingers and inspects his face, enjoying the way he casts his eyes down and away from her. Every ounce of baggage this poor little man carries lives right there on his face: purple bruises on high cheekbones, old scars from stress-picking, silvers that shine in long, dark hair. He looks particularly defeated today, offering no resistance when Daisy tilts his head this way and that.
Finally, Daisy tightens her grip and leans down, just enough to press a kiss where one old scar lies pale and distinct on his cheek. “Dinner, then,” she says, and he goes to set the table.
