Orpheus walked with his jaw set, his song still trembling on his lips. He could feel Eurydice behind him, not her hand, not her breath, but the absence she had been, now filled in again. The empty place in his life had weight, and it was her. Or what felt like her presence. How could he ever be sure?
He did not look back.
But oh, he wanted to. Needed to.

The training room was quiet except for the low murmur of Cassie and Sloane discussing a profile, their voices blending softly with the faint rustling of papers shuffled across the worn table. Lia lounged back on the couch, one leg tucked under her, eyes flicking occasionally to her phone, but mostly just watching the others out of the corner of her eye. Dean stood near the door.
Michael sat apart from the group, legs stretched out in front of him, flicking through a stack of photographs. He kept shifting his arms, crossing them, the gesture subtle but persistent, as if trying to shield something fragile beneath his skin. None of them said anything, Michael had always retreated like this before, and the others knew it was better to give him space than pry.
It just happened to be the wrong thing at the wrong moment that set him off.
