She climbed the ladder up and out in a way no one else could, and Joel wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

He should have kept his mouth shut, Jiaoqiu thinks as the effects of the Anti-Lupitoxin pill start to wear off, trembling on his knees as wave after wave of debilitating fear washes over him.
What hubris to think he could somehow stall Hoolay. Jiaoqiu should have known that him trying to save anyone would be futile. In the end, his failed attempt to help will just end up making things worse instead.

This is perhaps the single most obvious case of foreshadowing in existence. It starts in a pit in the ground and a chance meeting and laughter. It starts with a red flower and a two-second joke and blushing cheeks and messy blond curls. It starts with the knowledge that he has always fallen fast, he has always fallen hard, and there can only be one winner and it has to be him, but does it? Does it really?
In essence, the rest of his short life is a refusal to this one question.
It starts in darkness.
