Summary
He drinks in the pungent corpse. Since he awoke on the ship, his mind has been cold and empty. But something stirs, with his hands close to this body. He knows nothing of why. But he finds a half-smile flittering across his face. It’s instinctual, so he — like the bruise — presses into that, time for it or no. He tries to remember the last time he stood above a corpse.
As soon as he delves into his mind, it is filled with flashes of a thousand different dead. He doubles over at the onslaught, but then he steadies himself — with difficulty. There is something unknown and unspeakable, deep within his heart.
And he doesn’t think he likes it.

Summary
And it’s clear the conversation is over then. It leaves Iloorin spinning as Astarion moves away from him, leaving him standing alone. He . . . apparently, he does look as bad as he feels. He hadn’t realized Astarion was paying that careful attention, though. He’s surprised Astarion noticed at all. He’s more perceptive than Iloorin had given him credit for, which isn’t a mistake he’s going to make again — and shouldn’t have made in the first place. Not when Astarion had been watching them yesterday before Iloorin had even noticed him.
Why say that, though? Why say any of that to Iloorin? It was good information to use against him. But he supposes Astation already has; he’s used it to humiliate Iloorin. The feeling — shame — makes him feel sick. Not in his head, but in his entire body. He wants to rip Astarion limb from limb for his pitying tone, his mocking ‘do take care of yourself.’ He thinks that’s a bad idea, but he’s hard pressed to remember why.
He turns around, and in the dizzying movement he remembers. Because he’s not the Urges that kept him up last night. He will not succumb to them.
He won’t.

Summary
“I want to thank you,” Astarion said as Valas approached.
“For having such delectable blood?” Valas teases, coming to a stop in front of Astarion and his tent.
“For what you said when I was in front of that vile drow,” he clarifies.

Summary
“Well,” she admits, cocking her own head to one side, “we probably could’ve used you. We got . . . stuck.”
He arches a perfect eyebrow. “Stuck,” he repeats, waiting for her to elaborate. But she was good at telling stories. She knew how to build tension.
So she nodded. “There was a puzzle.”
“Ah,” he says, understanding. “Of course there was,” he adds, and he’s got a point. There’s always a puzzle.

Summary
Something was off.
She knew enough to know that.
She couldn’t pinpoint what it was — not yet — but she had an uneasy feeling as she walked to meet Astarion.
This was what she’d wanted, so why was she not ecstatic? She’d wanted this almost since she met him, but not in this way. She didn’t need to sleep with him to get what she wanted. She just wanted him. To know him, to understand him, to fight with him, to get him to open up to her.
She didn’t know if this was the way to do that.

Astarion is near the docks when he feels Cazador's compulsion on him snap. He doesn't think twice. He just takes the next available ship out of Baldur's Gate. Its destination: The City of Splendors. Waterdeep.

Gale takes back the glass, now empty, and then seems to fidget a little. “There is something I wanted to get your opinion on- but it can wait until you’ve recovered. You don’t look well at all- no offense meant, of course.”
“None taken,” Astarion says sweetly. “Please go on. Tell me exactly what it is about my appearance that you find lacking.”
