In the Portal in the Timeless Halls, Vanimórë sees a vision of a different Earth - one where the Fëanorions were not reborn, and there was no apotheosis by the shores of the sea. Summary
Bilbo Baggins had simple desires, all he needed was the love and comfort of a home, friends, and family. However, he was not suited to living comfortably while others did not have those. Nor could he live quietly after having a taste of adventure. His love of exploration, and of helping others, would leave him with a reputation with everyone he would meet.
He could not control the impressions he would leave. He would be considered mad in the Shire, but known across Middle Earth as a miracle-worker, a dear friend, and most importantly (and improbably), a wizard.

The REAL reason Bilbo ran after the dwarves was because he accidentally crushed Lobelia's prize winning plants and had to run as she chased after him threatening to disembowel him.
Believing he had left Lobelia back at the shire, Bilbo is among the shocked and frightened when he sees Lobelia cutting her way through the army of Orcs and Goblins at the BOFA armed only with a kitchen knife and making her way towards him.
