Summary
Zuko and Azula never fall for the rivalry their parents seem set on and grow up closer than they are told they should be, loving each other the only way they know how. Fully willing to burn and be burned for their other half. They make a good team, until Zuko is burned and banished and Azula is alone, outraged (scared), in the weasel-snake den. With her careful instructions, Zuko is able to be presumed missing on his quest for the Avatar and begin his life as a pirate, wrecking havoc on all sides of the war.
Azula's brother refuses to rule ashes by her side and she refuses to let anyone besides herself upset him this much, so the war must end. Her spies spread the rumor that he lives and the Fire people hold out hope for their beloved prince and saving grace. Zuko becomes the captain of 青い炎, or Aoi Honō, Blue Spirit, and Phoenix Prince while Azula becomes the monster that everyone fears. As Zuko is joining and teaching the Avatar, Azula is manipulating her way through conniving nobles and convincing her father the weapon he raised isn't a threat to him. After all, when has a monster of a daughter and a useless son ever overthrown their Fire Lord?

Summary
When their mother died, Zuko was devastated. His mother's last words to him played over and over again protect your sister He thought himself responsible for her death and he owed it to her to follow her request. He reconnected with Azula and strengthened their relationship. It was going well until he spoke out of turn in a war meeting. This lead to him fighting an Agni Kai between his father, fire lord Ozai.
It resulted with Zuko being given a scar and getting banished from the fire nation. Or so you would have thought.
Azula loved her brother, she couldn't take it if he left her alone with her father. She asked for permission to join Zuko in his exile, however Ozai refused and instead arranged for her lessons to become the heir.
She believed it to be unfair and she wanted revenge for her brother, need blood to be spilled. In secret she used the same poison her mother used to murder her grandfather and sprinkled it on the fire lord's tea.
Within a fortnight fire lord Ozai was proclaimed dead making Zuko the new fire lord.

Zuko, now Zuka, then becomes the most respected and feared general of the Fire Nation due to her multiple victories in the space of three years, being the one who took Omashu in just three days, captured King Bumi, and proclaimed the city as the new Ozai in honor of her father. Azula on the other hand is the cold, manipulative one who can get what she wants with words. Both are brilliant and due to the culture of the Fire Nation both they and their father, and even their uncle Iroh, are seen as goddesses. Ozai is proud of both of them.

But most of all, a mother's love teaches her children how to love. It is as deep as an ocean, steady as earth, uplifting as air, and most importantly, as dangerous and passionate as the fiercest fire. Gentle, but always dangerous if provoked. And it teaches well.
Azula has a hard time learning proper emotions. But she can recognize them. She knows anger is her father's eyes sharpening, and sadness sounds like her brother sniffling in the garden. She knows her mother loves Zuko. She thinks her mother might love her too. It's always impossible to decipher emotion when it's pointed at her. Better to observe and understand. Her mother poisons grandfather to save Zuko's life and flees to save her own.
