The orange dazed Regulus’s vision as he gazed upwards, but not enough to dull the vast splay of stars that spanned, crystalline and sparkling, from battlement to battlement. He could feel James’s body heat next to him as James leaned in to align their eyes and pointed up to the night sky at the brightest star, hanging above the mountains at the south-eastern horizon.
“I’ve never been so good in Astronomy,” he said quietly. “Really, all I know for sure is Sirius’s star, and yours.”
“Mine?” Regulus repeated in a shocked whisper, imagining James sitting in class for years and somehow, in a sense, thinking of him all along. The thought filled him with a strange warmth.
James redirected his finger a bit to the east, landing immediately on Regulus like he had done it a hundred times.
“The king,” he whispered. “You know, I only realised this year that there are actually two of them.”
