Summary
Carlos knows TK’s recovery is personal. He just didn’t expect it to feel quite so lonely. When TK makes a new friend at a recovery meeting, miscommunication and misunderstandings leave Carlos feeling left out. After Carlos gives into jealousy, he seeks out some support spaces of his own. It turns out that there are some parts of this journey TK and Carlos need to navigate alone and some parts they can learn to navigate together.

After 3x13 – while TK is alone with Cooper, Carlos is alone with his thoughts. Both recall times they’ve chased the next high, other men, or each other. When Carlos arrives home, TK still has something important to say – and it's something he didn’t tell Cooper.

The sleeves of Carlos’ hoodie are too long for TK. He looks down at his fingers poking out and scratches the broken skin around his thumbnail, feeling like a boy. He feels like a boy a lot at the moment. It’s common after losing a parent, to regress into that place where your mom or dad have been gone from the house for a while, and you panic that they’ll never come home. One day, it happens. They never come home again. Even if you are an adult in your twenties, forties, sixties – it’s terrifying and an utter gut-punch.
"You want to talk about it?” Cooper asks. “Or not talk about it?"
TK takes a moment to consider this. Cooper's arrival at the loft, upon secret invitation from Carlos, was something of an ambush – albeit a welcome one. Nonetheless, TK had intended to spend the whole evening alone with his thoughts. He hadn't expected to articulate any of it.
"Yeah, I do,” he says, “And then I think I want to talk about Carlos."-

Six months after Gabriel Reyes’ death, TK grows concerned about Carlos’ drinking and brings him to a meeting at the Y. Afterwards, over omelets at the diner, the husbands open up to each other. TK reflects on meeting Carlos after years of addiction and self-destruction, while Carlos has continued to seek closure by uncovering two unknowns: The identity of his father’s killer, and how his father truly felt about Carlos as his son.

Years ago, there was a young man in New York City called TK Strand and he had no idea that in Austin, Texas, a stranger called Carlos Reyes was aching, yearning, pining for exactly him. Tarlos Whump Week 2022 - Day 2: TK STRAND WHUMP: "What do you mean TK never made it there? I saw him leave a half hour ago - he should be there."
The ringing of the oven timer startled Carlos, he had been so engrossed in his book that he hadn’t noticed how late it had gotten. He put his book on the couch as he got up to pull the chicken from the oven. He remembered that he had timed it so that dinner would be ready right after TK got home from his AA meeting, but TK wasn’t home yet. Once the oven was turned off, the food placed on the stove, Carlos crossed back over to the couch. He picked up his phone, immediately opening it to see if he had missed a text from him. Seeing none, he sent TK a quick message as he set their table.

Summary
TK is sick of watching his husband spiral into his obsession with his dad's case, and he's terrified of Carlos going down the same dangerous path of grieving that he did. He attempts to confront him, but what was supposed to be a constructive conversation turns into a vicious argument that jeopardises their marriage and causes TK to make some confessions and confront trauma he'd been trying to bury.

They have a diabolically angsty argument for 5.5k words and then spend 5.2k words trying to apologise for it.Also, it's technically being released after, but this was written before 5x05 aired. And it was partially inspired by the promo/released scenes for 5x05, so while I wouldn't call it a spec fic, it's also not not a spec fic.
