“Hey,” Carlos says, his voice softening while his hand continues to smooth TK’s hair. “I’ve got someone who wants to say hi.”
The phone camera flips again and TK’s face disappears briefly as Carlos turns the phone around so TK can see the screen. Her son comes back into focus and Gwyn can make out the edge of Carlos’s face in the corner, leaning on the bed.
TK swallows and she watches his eyes focus. “Mom?”
“Oh, my sweet boy.”

After a day of interminable silence, cell phone calls can finally get through to Texas and Gwyneth Morgan can finally speak to her family. First with Carlos and TK and later with Owen.

His fingers flex and tighten around the steering wheel, and he shifts in his seat, the belt now feeling like it's far too constricting. He's well aware that he's freaking himself out, he's overthinking, but it's completely justified. As much as he hates to think it, the fact is; this is exactly what it's like to be in a relationship with someone who has an unhealthy addiction.
"TK, answer the damn phone. Where are you?" Carlos mutters. The question lingers, and he's not completely sure if he wants to know the answer. "Please, please just be showering."

These last few weeks have been super stressful for him. Between Tim's death, the wildfires, his dad's helicopter crash, arguing with Carlos about his thing with his parents, him becoming a full time EMT, and now his dad’s surgery going wrong, he is hanging on by a thread. And that thread is about to snap. He hops in his car and just drives. He doesn't know where he's driving, only that he needs to get far away from the hospital, at least for now. He will obviously back, but for now he needs to be away from there. Hospitals just aren't a great place for him. He pulls into a gas station and just takes a few moments to breath, steady himself. It only makes him slightly less unhinged. But what he is thinking about makes him the most unhinged he's been in a year. He contemplates buying pills.
