The question isn’t a surprise, per se. It’s just that they’ve been lying in silence in their dimly lit bedroom for what has to have been half an hour now. Somewhere during that time, Martin’s hand had found its way up Jon’s (but really, Martin’s) shirt and now his dull fingernails scratch leisurely at his back. Jon’s currently melted into Martin’s chest, his arm draped over his waist, his mind floating somewhere in the ether. That’s why it takes him a moment to process the question, then he huffs a laugh into the crook of Martin’s neck.

Ch1
When Jon wakes up (and why is he waking up, he's supposed to be-) he is on an island. He can smell the ocean, hear it even. He's also covered in spiderwebs and has a dead man leaning over him. … needless to say, he doesn't stop hyperventilating until Martin also arrives, though the way his boyfriend solidifies out of fog certainly tries its very best to give Jon another heart attack (can he even get heart attacks?) (Martin joins him in just sort of… staring once he registers the other people on the beach.)

“Hey, Boss,” Tim waves with a slightly stilted grin. “Welcome to the afterlife. Sort of.” “Somewhere Else,” Martin mutters sotto voce. “I've been here for - I think a few hours, already? The staggered arrival times are apparently expected. There's… a lot of people here. Couldn't confirm it, but - I think maybe almost everyone who died to the Fears? Some are dead again already because they've been here so long. Sasha - uh. Sasha’s been filling me in.” Jon keeps staring. “... Yeah,” Martin nods. “ Yeah .” Somewhere Else is an island called Ichishi (first death) on an ocean called the Grand Line.

Jon dives to the side. The fog tries to cushion his fall - which works, but now he's distinctly damp all over, which is less than pleasant. He looks over to the object (?) that had crashed into the tree behind him - Too bright toobright it's like looking directly at the Sun And screws his eyes shut with a hiss of pain.

“Teenager,” he corrects himself as he gets back on his feet. “Sorry. I - am not entirely sure why that happened just now. My name is. Sims Jonathan, I… suppose, following your naming conventions. Welcome to Ichishi. You're… pirates?” “Monkey D Luffy, Captain of the Straw Hat pirates! Nice to meet you, Old Man Jonny!” The fog around Old Man Jonny stops moving entirely, which makes it almost as weird as some of the other weather he's seen on the Grand Line, but not really. “... Old man…?” Jonny mutters. “I - I'm not even 40… and. Please, call me Jon? Jonny is. Not very accurate, anymore.” - “... you know how a few people have pointed out that this world is weirdly similar to One Piece?” Martin asks instead. “Because the Straw Hat Pirates are on our shore with Jon as we speak.” Tim drops his Uno cards. (He wasn't going to win against Sasha anyway.) He's not the only one. “ What. ” The entire table choruses. “Do I look like I'm kidding,” Martin deadpans. (Tim's still not quite used to that - Martin being all deadpan and snarky. You'd think he would be , after a year, but. Nope.) “...I'm gonna go check on Jon in person,” Martin decides, then promptly dissolves into fog.

Jon has found himself humming Tales To Be Told under his breath, which not only hasn't happened in years but is also earning him increasingly curious looks from the walking skeleton.

(He isn't sure what kind of Statement this would be if he ever recorded it, but Jon is getting a distinct feeling of Spiral.) And ah yes. Statements. Why did every single one of these pirates have one , or at the very least a Story, Jon is going to vibrate out of his skin at this rate, he wants to Ask so many Questions. “... You okay, dude?” The kid with the incredibly long nose asks. “Because you kinda look like you're about to have an aneurysm.” The reindeer makes an alarmed squeak. Jon shrugs awkwardly, humming faltering. “... Er. I'll be. Fine. I just - have an eye for people with. Interesting stories to tell? I've also been told I'm an insensitive nosy bastard about it. So I'm trying. Very hard not to Ask. Because I've never seen a crew where every single member has a different Story to tell?” The teenager blinks, having apparently not expected that answer.

The pirates have started looking distinctly puzzled, all of a sudden. “What?” Jon asks, lowercase. “Nothing, just - you two seem awfully… lovey-dovey?” The ginger with the alarmingly thin waist asks more than answers. “Well, he is my boyfriend,” Jon’s eyebrows furrow. “ Oh. ”

“That song you were humming earlier - I don't recognize it. May I hear it in full?” Oh stars help him, of course. Jon sighs. “I'm not surprised - I did write it myself. Quite some time ago, but I'd be very surprised if it ever left the island.” The skeleton's eyes are practically sparkling. “Oh, fine, ” Jon sighs. “Would you mind indulging me and playing along on your violin? The melody goes something like this.” He hums it as clearly as he can. “Certainly,” Brook nods and spends a moment tuning it. “Alright then, one last time,” Jon falls back into his old role as easy as breathing.
