"Fffuuuuuuuck," Max groaned. This was what agreeing to play the stupid game with Neil got him. "I already told you I didn't want to play your lame-ass fucking game!"
"Well I didn't do this!" Nerris argued. "And it is not lame!"
"I think Harrison did it," Preston said, clapping as he did so.
Neil groaned. "This is his fucking magic, isn't it?"
Nerris squealed again. "Ohmigosh that's amazing! His magic can do this?!"
Nerris looked around to try and find him. Max stood up, mentally telling himself about everything he hated here. His feet, his clothes, his height, Nerris being too excited, damn Harrison still fucking sleeping.
"Well, I don't see anything else around here that could explain it," Preston shot back, still smug for figuring it out.

Magic was a weird, fucked up thing, according to Max. He could still barely stand Harrison's magic, if not because of all the weird shit it did, but because of how unpredictable it was.
Like just now- one second, they were just sitting and talking in Nerris and Harrison's living room while the kids played around them, and the next second there was a bright flash of light that filled the room.
Nerris blinked in shock, staring at the two new additions to the party- a 10-year-old and a 16-year-old Max. "That was- that was definitely wild magic."

David was already expecting, or maybe hoping, something would happen with Max and his parents today. He was expecting- hoping- Max's parents would show themselves to be unsafe to hand their kid off to, and he would have an easy excuse to keep Max under his care. He even had his police friend's number ready, just in case. If not, he would maybe have to try a more underhanded way to make them less willing to take the kid home- Gwen or Campbell would know how, and Gwen wanted Max safe just as much as David did. And he deserved so much better than whatever he was getting from his parents.
What David was not ready for was Harrison's parents to be the first ones to be the problem.

It's everyone's third year back at Camp, aside from Ered who decided to be a councilor this year. Everyone had been staying close over the past ten months, but no one really knew how much everyone had changed until they got back. The biggest change was in their jaded friend Max, who now wore the biggest smile out of all of them. He was finally himself, he was finally happy. This caught everyone off guard, but once Preston saw how much the boy had changed, he couldn't help but feel like he might have a chance with his friend.

After they grew too old for Camp Campbell, they discovered that they all live in the same county. They kept in touch and, as they grew older, became the family they needed.

Preston Goodplay is nothing if not dramatic. That was the job of an aspiring thespian such as himself, to act every day as if he were on the stage until he would finally get there. Though lately, with every insult hurled at him whenever he stepped on the shoddily-made excuse of an amphitheater, it was hard to think he'd ever become more than he was now: a laughing stock among his peers.
Something that made it a bit more bearable was another performer, albeit from an entirely different genre, that understood. That would be Harrison, the young magician, Preston's tentmate and very good friend, thank you very much.

David didn’t know what was wrong with him. He just didn’t understand. Why did he feel this way, why was this happening? He’d felt this way all his life, but he really just didn’t understand. Why did he feel like something was off, something was very, very wrong? It had nagged at him his whole life, like a ball and chain attached to his ankle. He had ignored it his whole life, just kept dragging the ball along, waiting for it to fall off, to erode away with age. It never did. It just got heavier, it grew. David never knew why. He never knew why, whenever he stood in front of the mirror he felt sick. He could never explain the negative feeling. He never had a word for it. Until Max showed up.

Harrison leaned down, and Max scowled, and reached out to shove him. Harrison grabbed his wrist. “You’re jealous.”
“What, of you? I don’t want a dumb magic partner, hard pass, thanks—” Max said, trying helplessly to yank his wrist out of Harrison’s freakishly strong grasp.
“Of Nerris.”
Max stopped moving. The world stopped moving for a second, and he couldn’t hear the sounds of the other campers getting ready in the nearby tents, and the birds shut up. Everything was blurry, foggy. Then it went back to normal, and Max forced a scowl again and yanked his wrist out of Harrison’s hand. “Of fucking course not. You’re a freak.”
“So I’m right,” he said, leaning back, and his relaxed pose and his hands in his pockets infuriated Max to no end. “Damn, I—”
“You’re a freak,” Max said again, with as much venom he could pour into his voice, but he could hear it shake. “And I’m—I’m not a fucking freak.”
OR
Max realized something, in the middle of the third summer of camp. He immediately tries to un-realize it. Also, general rule: never be a dick to Harrison.
